Although Doppler only measures Systolic BP. Invassive is best but prob not the best for routine ops.

I kno its easy for me to say, working in referrals.

Re: pale mucus membranes in young bitch spays

not on iv fluids -not standard practice , not on a BP monitor just pulse ox / oeophageal stethoscope and me !! have got a BP machine but very unreliable and old - time to ask for a new one i think!!

Re: pale mucus membranes in young bitch spays

Do you have access to blood pressure monitoring?? I just think they go shocky but it can be very scary especially if it is a new grad operating, it can be very worrying for them. We just make sure temperature is ok, they are on at least 10mls/kg/hour of fluids, and that there is no bleeding. Usually once they are recovering in sternal recovery and we put them in this position as soon as possible, then their colour returns to normal.

Pre-op we use acp/vetergesic for pre-med and any dog under a year we always give half dose acp as usually they are quite lean but also it seems to affect them more.

Re: pale mucus membranes in young bitch spays

muhahahaha I thought I was correct on this, ta Little Nicky... wooof wooof

Re: pale mucus membranes in young bitch spays

We had a dog in recently that had an ovarian hysterectom as part of her procedure. Patient had an artial line placed (for measuring bloody pressure), during pulling on ovaries patient become hypertensive althou the patient remained stable. Following resection of ovaries and uterus, patient became hypotensive and pale mucous membranes.

We gave a bollus of colloids to try and rectify the drop in blood pressure. We have an anaesthetist at work so any questions I can fire at him and respond if required

Re: pale mucus membranes in young bitch spays

I recall a vet telling me ages ago that their blood pressure falls significantly during the procedure? Probably explains the pale mm's, I'm sure others will have their opinions too.
