My sister is currently looking for a new show pony for my niece. She has found the perfect one but he has a small sarcoid between his back legs. Current owners vet has said he will remove it

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?
i researched and if they are removed when they are 5 and under they are less likely to have them return x
That's what her vet said, i still don't think she has made a decision

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

Mine was 4 when a nodular one as found near his sheath, sent off to liverpool uni, and 3 months later no more sarcoid! brilliant stuff!, its been a year and none have come back, i researched and if they are removed when they are 5 and under they are less likely to have them return x

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

Aparantly pony has had it removed today, I don't know anymore than that at present. It's such a tough decision for her and I really don't know what she is gonna do. I'm really begining to think she should stear clear. Obviously the ponies health is important but so are the financial implications. If she buys him for the asking price and he gets more she risks loosing alot of money.
Such a shame really

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

My mare had a small nodular sarcoid (about 12mm diameter) on her upper inner thigh when I bought her as a 4 yr old. The vet put an elastrator band around it and it dropped off after a few days. I took a risk with this but she is now 19 yrs old and has never had another. It depends upon the type of sarcoid as some can be treated more successfully than others (bands, creams, cryotherapy & surgery are all routinely used). I agree with previous posters that you should get your vet's advice. I was lucky with an otherwise perfect horse, but I have seen some people go through misery.

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

No worries I personally wouldn't risk it although mine is a grey and it's on his neck but still

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

We are aiming at county level with hopefully hoys qualification. Pony has the goods it's just such a shame about the sarcoid. I suppose it's in a place where it wouldn't be visible but that's only if pony doesn't get more. Im not sure what she will end up doing but I will pass on your info too jade.
Thank you

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

My horse has one on his neck and he is a county level show hack. When he got the sarcoid we stopped showing at higher level and have left it alone. Can't say for definite especially in such a young horse. I personally wouldn't

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

Thank you for that info, I can honestly say I don't know as much as I should about the. Will defo get pony vetted, the current owner has been very open and said she wouldn't sell him unless we had a vetting with our own vet. He has very good bloodlines and they don't want their stud to be slated or given any bad press, at least we know we won't be getting stuffed over if they are that worried about their reputation.

Thanks again for info, will pass it on to my sister as well.

Re: Sarcoid - would you buy a pony with one?

My own horse had one and have also known many horses with just solitary ones but also known 2 horses who ended up covered. I have always known them treated with special cream from Liverpool uni or exterra cream though not sure the latter is still available. I have never personally known them surgically removed. I think there are different types of sarcoid so maybe worth getting a picture of it to Liverpool uni who may be able to advise as they do seem to deal with them a lot, location of it is also important as to whether it may interfere with tack or rugs. My own horses was a warty type one not bleeding or growing rapidly so I personally treated with some herbal stuff as someone else on my yard had amazing results with it and wanted to avoid a vet call out unless needed so thought I had nothing to lose by trying it first and it did shrivel and fall off - maybe it was going to anyway but I was happy either way! I used green tea sencha orally though the company I bought it from had a cream too but I didn't use that. If in any doubt get opinion of an impartial vet - I would advise getting it 5 stage vetted anyway and vet who does this can also advise if surgical correction the right thing to do. Personally if pony was 100% perfect in every other way I would at least get the vetting done - good ponies can be hard to come by :)
