I'm soon to be a 2nd year student in a small 1 vet practice, I've been here for over a year and looking forward to becoming a qualified nurse!
I'm starting to panic because my practice is pretty old-school I feel like I'm going to be missing

Re: PANIC :(

Go do it! You'll will learn heaps and your confidence will grow. Just remember we were all trainees, students, newbies, newly qualified nurses at some point so most of us just want to help :)

Don't be scared and stop worrying x

Re: PANIC :(

Hello :)

we do have another practice I could go to which is looking very likely, I'm just glad it is something that other students are doing!

I'm a receptionist not a nurse but we do get requests from other practices (including PDSA) to have their students for a day or 2. We are sa & exotic practice so they come just to see a different type of practice. Do none of your vets or nurses have contacts in other practices locally? Maybe a little further away so they are not immediate competition. Do you have a PDSA or RSPCA hospital locally - they may be grateful for your assistance...good luck for the future x

Re: PANIC :(

I think that's what I'll have to do for certain things in my NPL otherwise I'll never get it done!

I did this and it helps to see how other nurses work. It can be scary but does get easier each time you pop in.

Re: PANIC :(

I'm so glad I'm not the only one haha.

The learning part I love because if I was in a job where I knew EVERYTHING I would get bored! I just panic that I'm not going to be this amazing nurse that I want to be but I guess that part's on me.

I'm exactly the same, looking at CPD and jobs going everywhere and I've not even qualified yet :D

Message me if you ever want because sometimes it's nice to have a rant :)

Re: PANIC :(

I am in your exact position! I am going into my 2nd year and work in a very small practice. I do struggle a lot as we just don't have the case load, my NPL is going very slowly, and I worry that when I am finished I will be scared to work somewhere busier as I may not have good enough skills!

A few nurses have told me that you can go to any other vet practice and you will have to learn how to use all new machines, new protocols, use different drugs etc. I think in nursing we will always be learning, and we just have to work a bit harder :)

Some lab companies have some good CPD i think? Maybe see if you can volunteer to go to a busier practice on a day off and shadow them?

Clinical procedures in veterinary nursing, and the veterinary nursing handbook have some good step by step guides on how to do certain things. I find them useful just to read....even though I may not get to do some tasks where I work currently.

I am impatient too, I am already looking at CPD and other qualifications for after I qualify as an RVN!

Re: PANIC :(

Thanks all, I feel a lot better.

I'm determined to work hard and work my way up, I'm just a little bit impatient ;)

Is it the norm to go to other practices for certain things? We don't really have a neighbouring practice I can go to (opposition and all that) but there is the hospital we send our out of hours patients to where I could go, just the thought intimidates me!

Jeez I worry too much!

:D

Re: PANIC :(

I could happily re quote the previous posts as they are all good words of advice. You obviously care which means you won't settle for second best. One of the good things about this new PDR is that it is hard to 'fudge' therefore if you are not getting the cases, or don't have the equipment to do the job completely your clinical coach will need to find you an alternative way of achieving that training, this often means going to a neighbour practice. We have all worked in places with equipment from sublime to frankly fisher price but the important thing is that you understand your limitations and the limitations of your equipment before offering information. I was once asked to determine which cancer cell under a microscope that you couldn't even see urine sediment under!
I love being a clinical coach but won't be taking second year students again as we don't have the case load required, something to think about?
Good luck, I am sure with your great attitude to your training you will do fine :)

Re: PANIC :(

Don't forget, when you qualify you will have passed exams and gotten high enough marks that you will have been tested alongside your peers and found to meet all the requirements of a qualified Veterinary Nurse. And in order to get there you will have been given the support and experiences necessary by your tutors and coaches.

You will have learnt all you need to know to go into any practice and be a nurse. If your coach is not often at the practice does this mean there is another branch he/she works at? Maybe a larger busier one with different equipment etc you could spend some time at to get different experiences? There are always variances between practices - ask any locum nurse about walking into a new practice and being confronted with a different lab machine or bit of anaesthetic monitoring kit or heck, even a different recommended flea and worm treatment protocol! You get shown how to do it... and then you do it. You scribble down the instructions step by step on the little notepad you ALWAYS keep in you pocket and get on with it, and no-one will judge you for it. Please don't fret about what hasn't happened yet. You are going to be just fine.

Re: PANIC :(

Please don't lose confidence.
