I completed my ANA certificate whilst volunteering in a non training practice for a year. They suprised me a few weeks ago by enrolling as a TP and offering me a student nurse position!

Although I have already worked there, being officially a trainee is a terrifying thought as peoples expectations of you change. Also, watching the nurses every day - I worry ill never have as much knowledge as them as they have all been qualified for many years!

Like you, I hope the fact I have left it longer than some to get into the career I want - won't hold me back or make me less capable.

I'm sure all these nerves are normal! Embrace them, because if you weren't nervous id be worried that you didn't care :-)

And don't forget to be excited - it's the chance of a life time with placements being so hard to get. I still can't believe my luck!

Good luck!

Re: Starting training as a veterinary nurse

Dont be afraid to ask questions , ask if you can do things and if you have nothing to do busy yourself with cleaning, patient pampering or stocking up drawers and cupboards :) Shows your interested and have initiative. Nothing worse than someone who just stands there. Good luck :)

Re: Starting training as a veterinary nurse

As a mature student what you have to your advantage is being more self aware and having more life experience which shows already as you are thinking an plannin ahead about how its going to be and how you dont want it to be also!!

when i started i was quiet, not because that was my nature but because i didnt want to make any bad jokes with the nerves or get under anyones skin! apparently i came across as confident anyway so its probably a good job i reigned it in a bit or i might have come across as over confident!

the newes mature student to our practice is very outgoing and is a breath of fresh air, she has oodles of charisma and is loud as you like right from the word go but very polite at the same time. fits right in no probs. However our young part time student was a little prickly and got in a huff quite alot - teenage hormones - not good!

guess my point is there is no right or wrong, but first impressions do stick. I think you cant go far wrong with being quietly confident, polite and extremely helpful. And age is on your side

When i started my training I had already been working at the practice as an animal care assistant and my first year of training wasn't much different to be honest as you have to learn to walk before you can run :) Can be a difficult time as some people want you to push yourself where as others think you shouldn't do too much. Glad I am qualified now! Congratulations on beginning your training, it is so hard to get a placement.
