As a first opinion practice nurse i see referrals nurses as the best of the best and the absolute smartest, and gold standard in everything they do. I would love to work in referral however fear not being smart enough for it.

[/quote]that's really sweet to hear, but I'm sad you don't think you are smart enough. If its something you really want to do go for it! its not that scary and you will learn loads, as long as you are willing to learn you'll be fab :)

Very interested in doing some referral nursing and have just landed my dream job in orthopaedic referrals! Will let you know my feeling but I think the nurses are specialised in what they and are the best if the best

It all depends on the speciality of your referral centre I'd think? Mine was orthopaedics so quite methodical, intricate and intensive rather than racing around, although as I say, manic and exhausting at times! We rotated roles too, surgery, wards,consults (xraying etc), 1st opinion. But as 1st opinion is dominated by neuterings we were dominated by tplos! So I guess referral nursing varies depending on the practice! I found it extremely exhausting and there were emergencies-spines and breaks etc. And some weekends when it was just you and the vet, you'd have to perform all roles and still be oncall for emergencies-v long days! Those were the days you longed for the team's return on monday!!!

I have been working in a large referral centre for nearly 3 years now. I'd have to disagree with the above post as I absolutely do not have more time. Pretty much everyday is manic from start to finish. We also don't have many nurses specialising in a particular area. The majority actually rotate between wards, theatre and medicine. Spot on little demona! Generally more structured than 1st opinion, with less of those pesky 5pm emergencies (rabbit flystrike etc!) Still gets pretty manic at times...

not having had any experience in referral at all:
I expect working in referral practice as more intensive nursing where you get more time and goodies to perform gold standard nursing
Less 1st line contact with clients (no emergency triages, flea/worm/puppy/kitten education nurse consults etc)
More likely to specialize in 1 nursing area (ie surgical soft tissue/orthopedic, oncology, dermatology, ward nursing, imaging etc)

Curently working part-time (weekend ward nursing) in an orthopaedic referral hospital; combine this with part-time locum nursing at 1st Opinion during the week. PM me if you need info, happy to help.

Of course, no probs! Didn't progress as we were quite a small team so there wasn't much scope for progression. They were keen for me to do my advanced diploma though but in the end things changed and I moved. We had a rota so one day a week we did on call, one day on 1st opinion etc and a weekend in 5 on call which was often pretty intense! There was a lot of responsibility especially when you were on call/ working late and on your own. xx

I worked for 2 years in an orthopaedic referral clinic. In some ways it was quite monotonous and lacked variety. However the nursing team was so efficient and professional, standards were really high and obviously the equipment and expertise was exceptional. We were given a lot of resposibility. Relationships with clients were very strong too and they held the whole team in high regard. I now work in mixed practice and have really notice how much my nursing skills have improved and my standards have increased. I think its a really useful thing to do for a time even if you do not want to specialise long term. Good luck with the article!
