I am a locum recruitment consultant for Recruit4Vets. You are correct lots of nurses who work part time do locum work on their weekends/ days not in practice. As others have mentioned below you may need to check your contract however it is not normally an issue to work at other practices in your local area as a locum nurse and won't affect your current employment. It is a great way of earning extra money which is paid on a weekly basis and having the flexibility of choosing to work on days that suit you (the pay rate is good too!).

If you would like more information about suitable vacancies in your area or some more advice on working on weekends and days you are not employed please contact me on here or, 01423 701321 and ask for Olivia. Alternatively my email is olivia@recruit4vets.co.uk.

Kind Regards,

Is best to be up front with this sort of thing. One of my previous employers had it in our contract that we were not allowed to work in any veterinary practice within a 30 mile radius and only with his permission (which pretty much ruled out anywhere we could work without having to spend more on transport etc than we would be earning)

Re: Locum work

I would be inclined to ask your current employer, as many contracts state that you can only work for one veterinary practice, due to "competition". Not all are like this though.

As the VN/Vet world is small, it would be better for your current employer to find out from you, rather than finding out from someone else - such as an ex-colleague, friend or client.

Also, check wages/tax as if it is a 2nd employment, you will be paying a higher rate of tax and not earning as much as you think.

I did do a few OOH for Vets Now when working in practice, my employer was fine with this and was only concerned that I would be tired and that if he wanted me to do overtime, I wouldn't be available for it.
