I am going to be doing some locuming in October, the company said I will need to register with an umbrella company for payment as they do not take on locums who are self employed unless a limited company.
After reading some brilliant advice from

Re: Locuming/company's payroll

I am a locum and I use an umbrella company as they do the chasing, do my insurances, sort annual leave pay and I get all my expenses back.
Don't use DANBRO awful!!! I use tarpon-uk and they are brill :-)

Re: Locuming/company's payroll

Thanks Jonathan :)

Re: Locuming/company's payroll

You get charged per timesheet submitted for each contract.

Re: Locuming/company's payroll

Thank you celine :)
How much do umbrella company's roughly take from your wages? Is it a lot?
Do they still charge if you don't work? So if I didn't work one month would I still have to pay there fee?

Thanks

Sarah :)

Re: Locuming/company's payroll

I really don't know the ins and outs of working at two practices at a time - I assume one would be classified as a "second job", and if you earn over a certain threshold of money you'd be taxed at a different rate (but I think unlikely to affect you.)

Go Umbrella company. You just have to fill out a timesheet for them each week, and you'll get expenses back and you can just stay with them (ie you are the employee of the Umbrella company) for as long as you like, and can hop from job to job with no worries. Danbro were great for me :)

Re: Locuming/company's payroll

Thank you for your reply.

I am all new to this. I am currently on maternity leave so I am out of contract from my company beginning of October. I have 2 shifts in one week with a company in October, but I will be working at different practices.

I will be working a couple of shifts weekly, (1-2) and will be at different practices.
I am confused regarding going on the company's payroll where I will be working at the time. If I am working at one practice one week and a different practice the following week or 2 different practices in the same week can I go on as many company's payroll at once? I have only left company's when in full time positions. Would it mean I will have to keep submitting P45 P60 etc. so confused.
I will not be travelling to far away, within 20 miles of where I am living.

Would it be better for me to be with an umbrella company. I would prefer to go self employed but the company where I will be working first don't allow it.

I'd definitely go umbrella, and then you just stay with them regardless of where you are working and hop around practices, UNLESS you're going to be in one place for a long time and aren't going to be travelling far etc
