I was wondering if anyone can fill me in a bit on the life of a principle nurse manager with vets now? What are the hours like? I know it will be 2-3 nights a week and 1 in 3 weekends but does anyone know how many days you will be expected

Re: Vets now Principle Nurse Manager

Hi, its probably easier to give an example of my typical working week. So this week I worked sunday night, so slept most of monday then did some management work in the evening, ie checking emails, etc. Tuesday I was off. Wednesday I worked so didn't do much in the day. Thursday slept then emails in the evening. Worked last night so have slept today and then I am off tomorrow. I choose my days off but stick to a pattern for my rota and only ever work 3 nights a week, less if I'm rota'd on for the weekend days. I try to do as much admin work as I can on shift but it's not always possible. Working nights takes some getting used to and my sleep pattern is now totally disrupted BUT in weather like this I really appreciate working nights (whilst everyone else is working i'm napping in the sunshine) and more importantly it enables me to work full time and still spend a lot of time with my kids.

It might be worth doing a shift in a clinic to see what you think and get a feel of the work. if you need any more information let me know.

At my telephone interview they explained how I will have to work 2-3 Nightshifts a week but as principle nurse I will be expected to work 5 days out of 7. Does this therefore mean I would effectively be working 5 full Nightshifts a week or do you work your additional days at other times?
Thanks again for all your help!

I currently work for Vets Now in the PNM role. On average i work 3 night shifts a week and 1 in 4 weekend days, as well as a fair share of bank holiday days, including christmas. I work in a busy hospital so the job can get stressful but it is also very rewarding. The postion is a bit of a dual role as you do your clinical work alongside managing the practice with the Principal Vet. Being organised and managing your time well is crucial for the position as there is a lot of email communication and work to do outside of the clinic, eg member practice visists, managing gaps, managing the nurses and admin staff. The role involves a lot of responsibility in managing the clinics, but you get a lot of support from the district staff and support office.

Hope this helps.
