At my practice we get Fridays off after working a weekend, so if your wanting a Friday off for a long weekend then it needs to fall on the Friday you would of had off for working the previous weekend. If you was taking a Friday off as part of a weeks holiday then a locum would be booked to effectively cover your friday as holiday, so the nurse who worked the previous weekend still gets their Friday off, and the practice is also not short staffed... Not sure of the legality side, and you would need to check your contract. Does seem a little harsh that you can never take a Friday off unless you have worked the weekend, as is not abnormal to take a two week summer holiday abroad and the practice should have a plan for this....

Re: time off

I have worked practices where Fridays off were rationed yes. It was possible to book no more than 4 fridays off where they were being used as part of a long weekend, all other Fridays had to be taken as part of a weeks holiday - this rule was brought in because we only had 4 nurses and if we didnt restrict Fridays and everybody decided to take their holidays as long weekends we would be dangerously short staffed on the busiest days (Mondays and Fridays) especially since the nurse working the previous weekend had a 1.30 finish (we didnt get paid for weekends and the half day compensated). Booking a Friday off where it immediately preceded a Bank holiday Monday was also a no no unless it was a part of a full weeks holiday.

I have worked in factories ( especially the knicker and hosiery factories where you had no choice where you took holiday and that was in the contract) 2 weeks holiday during the summer shutdown, usually a week for Christmas shutdown another week for Easter shutdown and the remaining 4 or 5 days that were either sick days or had to be booked weeks in advance

Re: time off

its not stated in my contract at all,

it includes both if we wanted to have a week off or just a long weekend.

Ive never heard such thing that a practice could do! Also getting a locum is out of the question :)

Re: time off

Does this include Fridays as part of a week off or having a Friday off as a long weekend?

Technically they can dictate when you take your holidays to suit operational needs, therefore if you having a Friday off on its own leaves the practice short staffed due to a rota'd day off for someone else then it is their right. Although there should be some give and take if it is part of a weeks holiday.

If you worked in a factory for example a lot of them still have a shut down period in July/August where all staff HAVE to take a portion of their holiday if they want to or not.

Re: time off

Do you have a contract?
