If you're working as self-employed then you just need to send them an invoice with:

-All your details on (ie name, address, contact)

-The hours you worked, hourly rate, and therefore invoice total

Then you will need to register as self-employed via HMRC, and do a tax return at the end of the financial year (April)

OR you can go through an umbrella company - they will do all the invoicing and work out tax for you BUT they take a cut of your income.

There is some question as to whether practice staff should work as self-employed - and whether they should always go through an umbrella or be on payroll, however this is the responsibility of the employer as far as I am aware.

I don't think these guys do. I've been checking their website and they say that locums are working as self employed, therefore responsible for paying their own taxes.

it will be a lot easier for you to go on payroll - and it wont cost you anything to do it, and you will then know that tax NI has been deducted at source and you have nothing to worry about - most employers will do this

I got the job by myself. I thought it was a permanent position, but then was told it would be kind of permanent, but as a locum. What umbrella companies would you recommend? And how much do they charge on average?

Did you get the job through an agency or by yourself? Unless you are a limited company then you shouldn't be invoicing yourself as you need tax and NI deducted As this is your first locum job I would reccomend looking in to an umbrella company. They set up a contract and sort your tax an NI. If done through an agency you send your signed timesheet to them and pay you by the method you prefer (agency payroll or umbrella company). They will invoice the company once you have finished working at the practice. Bit to go in to so feel free to ask anything if more details are needed. I'm sure other can give better answers
