Sign up to mystery shopping (you can get meals for 2 people, and other perks, etc where you pay for the meal and then the company refund you and pay a small sum on completion of a questionnaire). You get to pick which jobs you take on, so there is no obligation. It is something my sister does to have a social life whilst also having a mortgage! Good luck!

Re: Is there any financial support available?

Are you doing a FdSc, BSc or the Diploma route? IE are you taken on through a uni, you may be eligble if you are for a student loan. I believe there is a grant that the BVNA will offer but i dont know dead lines and things.

My first year was very much the same I worked 2 other Jobs as well ad doing my placment and college work, as Sal says its blooming hard work but is dooable. Call centre work is very well paid aswell if you can get a 5-9pm shift or a 6-10pm shift and discuss with your practice about having to work 2 jobs, they maybe able to offer you park time ACA work themselves. Always woth a look.

Hope this helps

Re: Is there any financial support available?

[quote user="Sal the 1st"]

Good for you for thinking ahead - but will add if you think you are going to struggle even before you start you are going to have to be really careful. There are practices that take apprentices - but to do that you would need to be in the practice full time - ie a lot more time than the 2 days a week and then the practice would be paying an apprentices wage which could be as low as £2.68 an hour for your age in your first year and thereafter might be only minimum wage, but then maybe any wage is better than no wage? It really depends on what you want and how you want to get there.

I don't know your situation but would you be able to just work your ass off doing whatever comes up in between now and September to build up a bit of savings and help give you a bit of a buffer?

Do you have any local charitable groups or groups generally you could approach to see if they are able to help you ( CAB or library may be able to help you with this) Not all bursaries are widely advertised sometimes you really have to search hard - but the advantage of that is nobody else knows about them either unless they have searched hard too. Have you got a Soroptimist group near you for example?

I don't think I'm going to struggle financially, my parents said they'd help me out, I would just feel better if I could contribute something myself rather than them pay for everything! Obviously in September I will be in the practice more than 2 days a week when I am training. Any wage is better than no wage!

I will certainly look into charities/groups. Thank you so much for your help!

I am starting my first year in September, I am working at the practice 2 days per week at the moment.

I think I have missed the application period for the bursaries, I found out too late!

I wish the vets would pay the students an apprentice wage or something.. just to help out! :(

Re: Is there any financial support available?

This is always going to be a problem the way nurse training is set up these days.

If you can't get financial assistance any other way can I suggest bar work or factory work. It is knackering but it is do-able. I know because I have done it myself. If you can get a 10pm-2am shift in a factory the pay is usually pretty good ( well enough to get you through) and you can get some sleep in before you need to be at college or work. Bar work/waitressing doesnt pay quite so well but is a possibility. Its a short term solution.

Dont know if there are any bursarys around at the moment - perhaps somebody else will know?

Are you just starting out or have you been at college some time?
