Hi yes its not great, its a difficult one as new practice and ,well no money... I understand I can only take hols when suits practice, not a problem I can fit round it. I'm very flexible and easy going, which may be the problem. As I am helping to get things going, paying locum fees would have broken my boss last year. I work mornings only so wasn't too bothered about time off and payment for hols was very generous (and did agree to it) . Its just at the moment I have a lot on and really could do with a break... But hay I think I need to man up and have a meeting and get it sorted and lay down some boundries.

I'm in two minds about this one. On the one hand holiday entitlement is at the discretion of the employer - as long as you get your total time off in the year, there is no obligation for it to be when you want it. The boss can even go so far as to tell you when your holiday is!

HOWEVER

It is a lousy boss who won't give somebody a fortnight's holiday when they want it. Legally you have few rights to demand change (unless, as Sal says, you are being treated differently to everyone else). Morally, your boss is wrong and it sounds like they're lucky to have any staff!

That is bang out of order - if you were told you'd be paid for holiday owing, that should have been in January's pay. (I hope you are getting the legal minimum requirement of 5.6 weeks off per year).

ok - so has everybody else managed to get holiday when they have wanted it? What happens if at the end of the year you have been unable to take holiday? Did you manage to take your full holiday entitlement last year? are you paid for the holiday you lose or does it roll over into following year? Would your employer find it easier to say yes if you could take two breaks of a week each but relatively close together?

Sorry lots of questions but trying to see a way around this for you

that's the problem... no formal arrangements at all, for anything. What was discussed re particulars of the job (hours,CPD, overtime pay etc), are different now.. no contract either.

what does it say exactly in your contract under holiday entitlement? is it you are entitled to x number of days a year or is it worked out to x number of days per month adding up to x number of days per year? Does it state anywhere the maximum length of holiday that can be taken at one time? or the period of notice needed to be given before taking a holiday? How many staff do you have in the practice and is this problem common to them all or just you?

But I do agree with previous poster if you can find a locum to cover your time off you have covered the bases and will make it easier for your employer to say yes to holiday

Put your foot down with the boss

Decide when you want two weeks and use this lovely forum to find a locum nurse to cover. Then go to your boss, say you have already got a potential locum and gain some extra brownie points for being so helpful
