I think it's safe to say we're all in the same boat!

I've had: 1 x JRT with a port systemic shunt, 1 x JRT with arthritis, 1 x Parsons russell with hormone problems, 1 x collie x with fear agression, 1 x CKCS with skin issues and an EBT with a ruptured ligament. A few things on going still but all happy other wise.

I agree that we spot things sooner and more for the better but on the flip slide we probably know whats coming and I dread the day I know its time for any one of my pets.In regards to the jack with the PSS it cost a LOT of money to fix him (best dog ever so i dont care!) but some people wouldnt have had him insured or the funds and i hate to think what may have happend. Things happen for a reason.

Re: Why is it alway nurses pets?

Hahaha and I thought it was me alone!! wow!

Re: Why is it alway nurses pets?

[quote user="Sal the 1st"]

All I can add is that when the time came I knew because I looked into my dogs' eyes and felt it was right; that they had 'lost the bright light'... I always say that I wouldn't have wanted them to reach the stage when they had lost the wag in their tail. All this is pretty subjective, however, as you say, the knowledge of what more would lay in store for them clinically did also affect my decision. Still, the small niggling shadows of doubt and guilt remain that maybe I was the bringer of death a day a bit too soon because of this knowledge? They were quiet, relaxed and unstressful deaths so I am comforted that their journey of pain leading up to the decision wasn't too great and because of my knowledge they could shuffle off this mortal coil happily hugged before the quality of their lives meant they could no longer be the furry beasties they needed to be...

As they say on FB.... "It's complicated"....!

I do find it very sad both for owners and pets in hopeless situations when owners want to do/try everything to cling onto their much loved pet just a little longer - and all it does is prolong the agony for both of them, but some people need that time to come to terms with the situation and to feel that they did all they could and didnt give up - and all you can do is support both them and their pet until reality dawns or death intervenes. Its difficult. Sometimes I have wondered if I am too quick to 'call time' with my own pets? or is it just that being in the job I realise sooner with my own when things are not going to get better or life has lost its pleasure for them?

Re: Why is it alway nurses pets?

Maybe the problem is that we spot things much earlier than your average person would? Have to say i`ve been really lucky have four cats all over 16 now and none are on meds....yet...

Little bit off topic but does anyone think that working in practice has changed the way they would treat their own animals? I hate to see older animals being put through big procedures that may only extend their lives by few months.
1 Lab - Hip dysplasia and arthritis (I know pedigree breed issues)

1 Vizsla x GWP - Allergies and runny eyes.

1 cat - RTA few weeks ago with infection to the leg that we need to operate on to repair the stifle once over this infection. Lost her brother to a RTA last year.

1 Lab - passed away last year after getting over a splenic tumour haemorrhage . Recovered to be well enough to have his spleen removed but didn't come around from the anaesthetic.
