I agree! If an owner had a collar with giant writing on like this i'd just assume it was one of those 'bling' collars with their names on! Also using the traffic light system is awful, Red for danger is just going to give certain breeds even more of a bad time. Yes the dog may have a red collar on but it doesn't necessarily mean he's aggressive. My dog had a thin yellow coat he used to wear that said 'give me space i'm a rescue' which was perfect because i didn't know how he'd react in certain situations (turns out hes the dog equivelant of an asbo child).

There definitely needs to be more of a push in practices about this campaign as it's simple and effective.

Re: Yellow Ribbon Campaign

Our foster brat has yellow ribbon on lead and collar l hate bandanna on dogs so wouldn't use one. A ribbon is cheap to buy and easy to tie on very visual and furthermore if a dog is a problem it shouldn't be off a lead.

A collar needs to be big enough to read and think how intrusive you need to be into the animals space to get close enough to a hairy dog or smaller dog. Not what l want on Harvey the idea is to back off... and how can someone read "snappy around big dogs" or "old and grumpy" "In season" many reasons that won't A) be on collars B) will cost a fortune

Yellow is used because guide dogs etc wear their yellow jackets and have yellow on their leads so it is a colour people are used to seeing on animals for a reason. You do not want red that means dangerous and dogs have enough bad press as it is yellow is a universal warning to say something happening.

It isn't widely known hence my trying to push and more folks get it about the better every so often it has an appearance on f/book. Several people have asked Andy and he explains that Harvey needs space he is nervous of big dogs and is snappy because of this.

Re: Yellow Ribbon Campaign
I have seen a few dogs wearing these colour coded collars with different wording on them http://www.friendlydogcollars.com/
That's exactly what I mean.

I have also heard of the Yellow Ribbon campaign and i think it is a great idea. A friend of mine uses one of the bandanas which has 'I need space' printed on it and another friend printed some of the posters and stuck them around the main dog walking areas to raise awareness and let people know why her dog was wearing the yellow ribbon on his lead.

Re: Yellow Ribbon Campaign

Must say, seems like a good idea in principle, but I fear that to make it widely enough understood would require a marketing and advertising campaign that would cost a fortune.

Until I saw this, if I saw a yellow ribbon on a dog, I'd have just assumed that it was something to do with charity, or the owner was a bit potty, or gay.

Also, the website shows a ribbon tied to the dog lead, which obviously offers no awareness when the dog is off the lead.

For me, one of two things needs to happen to this campaign:

1. The ribbon needs to be swapped for something more user friendly, which ideally wouid have the instruction included on it, and not rely on someone knowing what it means. In other words, a luminous wide collar with the words: "Gimme space" or "Keep Clear" or something like that.

2. If I was the organiser of this campaign, I'd try approaching the petfood companies and see whether one of them would like to help with the campaign. It might be a long shot - as they would probably want to be associated more with initiatives that highlight the bond between dogs and people, rather than telling people to 'stand back'! Still, this is a worthwhile cause, and may help stop children getting nipped etc. So you never know. And if a petfood company got behind it, you'd raise awareness in 5 minutes.

Re: Yellow Ribbon Campaign

We have put this on the ANIBASE facebook page which people are sharing, we have also forwarded to our local RSPCA home.....lets hope the campaign becomes more recognised soon.

Re: Yellow Ribbon Campaign

Yellow ribbon website have packs with posters and ribbons (bandanas and coats also available).
