I completed my PGCE a few years ago now and then you had to be teaching at least 3 hours a week (adding up to around 60 hours per academic year as Sharon detailed above). I had to do it at night too due to working hours but I did enjoy it looking back. It was all assignment based and required quite a lot of reading and researching on different topics and I had to have 3 lesson obs per year, collating a series of 10 lesson plans etc etc. It has all changed recently as Sharon mentioned so am not entirely sure of the content or structure now. Most FE colleges will offer the course.

Good luck if you decide to go for it. Teaching is fab!!!

Re: cert ed

I did my Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) part time. I did have a choice of timings, which included afternoons or evenings, but unfortunately, after working all day, I really struggled to cope with the evening class because I was so tired. You do have to be teaching in some form and I believe it is a minimum of 60 hours per year, but this may vary between course providers. The work is based on assignment submission rather than an exam and these can be quite technical and demanding unless you are very academic to start with (i.e.degree) and the tutor will come and observe you teaching on at least two occasions. The Cert Ed is now being replaced by CTTLS which is Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector and can be preceded by an introduction to teaching called PTTLS which is Preparing toTeach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Hope this helps

Re: cert ed

can u give me some info on what you have to do in the course, paper work , exams etc. am trying to find local college that does it in the evenings so doesnt effect work. x x

Re: cert ed

you do need to be teaching for a certain amount of hours but it isn't a huge amount. the course itself is not dofficult you get to go & watch other poeple in their jobs.
