We recently received an email from our supplier stating that Tramadol will now be a Schedule 3 drug - have any of you also heard this? We haven't heard anything from our usual supplier (NVS) yet.
Also, to refresh my memory, does that

Re: Tramadol schedule change?

Thanks for your posts, we currently store our Tramadol in the DD cupboard so doesn't look like we'll need to change too much. I'll pass it on to the practise manager

Re: Tramadol schedule change?

It has now been confirmed that legislation has been laid before parliament on 20th May 2014 and that the following legislative changes came into force on Tuesday 10th June 2014:

Tramadol is a Schedule 3 controlled drug (CD no register POM) but will be exempt from safe custody regulations. The VMD guidance note 20 gives clear guidance on how Tramadol is to be handled going forward.

It is not business as usual. Our customers have to supply a signed in ink (by a registered vet) requisition form in order to purchase Schedule 3 controlled drugs. These completed forms cannot be sent via fax or electronic copy and must be posted to us.

Re: Tramadol schedule change?

Had a call from NVS today, mentioned it to them its something possibly coming into place but there has been memo sent around them or dates set. Just been through word of mouth. So its fine to order as normal at the moment.

Also this was on the BSAVA website. http://www.bsava.com/Resources/BSAVAMedicinesGuide/ControlledDrugs.aspx

Schedule 3 drugs

Schedule 3 includes buprenorphine, pentobarbital, phenobarbital, pentazocine, midazolam and temazepam.

Only buprenorphine, diethylypropion, flunitrazepam and temazepam are subject to safe custody requirements, but it is advisable that all Schedule 3 Controlled Drugs are locked away.

They do not have to be recorded in the Controlled Drugs Register.

Written requisitions must be made to wholesalers.

Written prescriptions are valid for 28 days.

Witnessed destruction requirements apply only to importers, exporters and manufacturers. Schedule 3 drugs should be disposed of in the same manner as Schedule 2 drugs.

There are special requirements for extra information on written prescriptions.

Repeat prescriptions are not permitted.

Prescriptions cannot be faxed or sent electronically.

Hope this helps.

Re: Tramadol schedule change?

We were notified last week but not via our wholesaler - from the company we get generics from
