She is hand reared and is a house cat, until a few months ago she would go in to her litter tray no problem and go for a number 2. She now won't go near her tray and constantly

Re: My cat has issues...anyone help?

It may not be an issue with your cat, but I once looked after a stray cat that would only use a litter tray with actual soil in it - although if yours has never been outside it's probably not appropriate, but just a thought? Some very good other suggestions here though, I'd go with a health check too and also try Feliway and Zylkene. And I would consider starting to let her out - I suppose you just need to weigh up the pros and cons. Good luck!

Re: My cat has issues...anyone help?

Are the faeces normal? Is she doing it anywhere else in the house? May be worth eliminating any medical issues first, does sound like it could be stress more than anything though.

Is your litter tray near a window/door? (Feral cats could be looking in/ disturbing her).

Is it in a busy area of the house? (Cats feel at their most vulnerable when eliminating so prefer to do it when no one else is around to watch! ) Do you have litter trays in different parts of the house? At least one per floor?Behind sofas, in bathrooms, and under beds seem to be particular favourites.

Something could have spooked her whilst eliminating so she now has associated the litter tray with that scary experience, she may prefer a hooded tray, or vice versa if she has one.

Anything else changed in the house, new sofas/floor etc? Agree with others that feliway can be used, could also try Zylkene, has worked wonders with a few of my clients cats.Although it is a capsule it can be split and sprinkled on food - seems to be totally tasteless - have yet to meet a cat that wont eat it!

Re: My cat has issues...anyone help?
I have considered letting her out - although i'm very nervous about doing this as there are lots of feral cats that live in the area.
I have one cat that had previously been an indoor cat who, in the summer, spends about 90% of the time outside (his choice) he only returns for food and believe it or not to use the litter tray - so this may not be the answer.

Have you considered moving the tray to somewhere else entirely and sticking a food bowl over the 'old' area once it has been thoroughly cleaned or using a covered tray or having a second tray. Cats are peculiar animals we have 2 trays in the bathroom and somehow between the two of them they have decided that one is for number 1 and the other number 2. Would agree with the previous suggestion of feliway.

Is your tray on a vinyl floor or a carpeted floor ?

Re: My cat has issues...anyone help?

Don't cats usually do things like this when they're stressed. Have you tried the feliway plugin to see if that helps?
