I was wondering what do people use for warming their patients whilst under ga?
Our partners have just told us that we are not allowed to use heatpads at all now. After they had read an article on heatpads burning patients whilst in theatre

Re: Heatpads

[quote user="Nick Shackleton"]

They are fantastic. We have a deal with company, buy so many per month and you get a free warming unit or something like that.........

The deal is buy 65 blankets/quarter and get a free warming unit! From ASS just check the deal before ordering

Vicky C - hot hands are possibly the worst things around especially for furries. They can start off too hot and if the patient is lying on it wrongly then they could get thermal burns and if they burst, either from a weakness in the glove or from being chewed, the patient gets soaked with hot water causing more burns or with cold water casuing hypothermia.

We use Snugglesafe in the kennels, but I've just been to a lecture where they showed a picture of a cat, who had been in for a routine dental, who had horrific burns down one side of his body. This cat had been laid on a Snugglesafe, with the fleece on it, under a vetbed and the cat still managed to get burnt!

So I think I will be trying to change my protocols although we can't afford one of the Bair Huggers or equivalant

Ta for the info. Am very careful with them though, only use them under GA, rest of the time we use snugglesafes. And never lay the animal on them, put it under a blanket/towel one either side of their body.

One of clients had surgery on her knee recently, when she woke up, she had burns all down her legs, when she asked what they were from, she was told they were from the drapes that were wrapped round her legs!!! that particular surgeon liked to use them straight from the autoclave to guarantee the upmost sterility apparently....
