I also have a BTEC Animal Care and a BSc Animal Science

Re: Entry requirements for SVN

our student is a mature employee she has done the VCA course but has still had to retake maths and english functional skills courses to get considered for entry on to the vn course. so yes if you have a D in english i expect you would have to redo this. it used to be 5 gcses at A-C but then i think it changed to 5gcses grades a-c which MUST include english maths and science.

Colleges seem to be unclear. they have also asked for her gcse certs... she's lost them as its over 15 yrs ago.

Re: Entry requirements for SVN

It's my current employer that I applied to for a SVN position and it was my boss that said I don't have the grades. If you were applying to a college, your degree, because it is science based would be accepted above everything else. I failed my GCSEs miserably, but had a first and national diploma in animal care that I sat 10 years prior to applying, these were accepted without question!

I would always contact the college/uni that you are applying to prior to your application, or if you are applying to a practice as an svn, speaking to them directly. As many people do get confused as to what courses are accepted and what they equate to.

Re: Entry requirements for SVN

Its 5 years for GCSE's if its been over 5 years since you obtained them then you would have to do key skills to regain the equivalent qualification

Re: Entry requirements for SVN

I thought certain qualification became kinda void after a certain length of time, I'm sure it's 10 years for GCSes....ringing a bell from my first college days! You btec depending whether its a first or national diploma. That is worth eith 4 GCSEs at C or 2 Alevels. And your degree should supersede all previous qualifications. The VN diploma is at a learning level below your degree.

When I started nursing I had 4 GCSEs double Science, Mathis and English literature all at C and English language at D. Plus a BTEC First Diploma, merit. Equivalent to 4 GCSEs at B. Yet the RCVS rejected my application. Meaning I had to undertake the Pre-VN course. Now VCA/ANA course. It might be worth contacting the RCVS to tell you whether you have the necessary qualifications. Looking at the you don't have the typical entry requirement. However, you have evidence of further studies after your GCSEs. Also maybe contact your local VN colleges. And ask the same of them as of the rcvs

Re: Entry requirements for SVN

Its your D in English that might be the problem.
