My main plan is to get an Australian

Re: World Veterinary Service volunteer abroad experience?

Hi there, great to hear you are keen to get on the volunteering bandwagon! It is a fantastic way to utilize your skills and qualifications that you've worked so hard for!

I work for WVS, as Charity Support & Projects Manager, I'm the first point of contact for the charities who need help, provide advice and send out supplies, equipment and vet teams. I've been volunteering since I was 13 and first headed overseas ten years ago as a newly qualified nurse, helping out on various projects until I landed in Cambodia with the beautiful bears, I didn't leave Asia for 5 years so I am quite well placed to tell you that you'll have an absolute ball!

The working holiday in Australia is a fantastic idea- I headed there via SE Asia and spent a year working and travelling,I'd certainly advise you to contact the RSPCA, they are always keen to take UK nurses as locums and the Sydney centre where I locummed was a great place to gather experience.

I volunteered in Thailand on the way out and again on the way back and have since worked on welfare projects in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Hong Kong. I'd recommend Thailand as somewhere fun and easy to start.

All our members can access placement information on our website but feel free to fire your CV over to me at denise@wvs.org.uk and I can help talk you through some options and send over anything I have that sounds of interest.

Happy planning- Denise :)

Re: World Veterinary Service volunteer abroad experience?

I haven`t done any WVS trips but i did volunteer with an Australian charity called Vets beyond borders. I was based in Sikkim in India but got to go up into the foothills of the Himalayas with their mobile clinic.. was pretty amazing. I paid my own flights but food and accommodation were free. Good luck with whatever you decide to do
