If you take a look at my profile page you should be able to download a copy of a standard operating procedure for skin prep.

Section 2... Initial skin preparation relates well to the new TP05 OSCE task.

Beware that the DVDs have been out for a while and therefore the tasks may have changed a little - so check your methodology for any differences.

There is a lot of evidence about sterilisation and folding bags - but mainly American at the moment and is the sort of thing CCs should be getting at standardisation events. A lot is via human nursing and the articles can sometimes only be accessed with accounts like Athens.

I appreciate it is frustrating - for those tasks I advise never to fold bags. If you use the med and lrg bag there is no need to fold.

I hope all goes well at the next sitting - and try some of the practice options above.

Do you have any advice with regards to the 3 new OSCEs? I know the diabetes one was a previous one but the other two are new. I am no longer at college as just waiting to pass my practical now. I have been to revision sessions at college but the lecturers are unsure of how to do the calculation for the diabetic osce and I have concerns over the two new ones as I have no idea what the RCVS is specifically wanting. I know cleaning a kennel and surgical prep of patient sounds straight forward but there are many ways of doing them but I want to be sure to do it the way required. With surgical prep of patients I have always been taught using circular motions but I know from the steps that this is not what they are looking for. Thanks

Re: City and guilds OSCE's

Beware that the DVDs have been out for a while and therefore the tasks may have changed a little - so check your methodology for any differences.

Are any of you getting OSCE prep at college? This could all be covered there.

Remember you get 1 min to read the task before entering the station - your prep prior to the exam should be making a plan so you can think about this when reading the task:-

- calcs first is a good plan

- get equipment ready

- do you need PPE/WHO hand wash?

- key steps

You are not failed on silly things - if you fold the self-seal bags incorrectly the steam cannot penetrate the item being sterilised.

There is water if you ask for it - there are extra examiners around the room.

You can ask the examiners anything you like - obvs related to the exam. If they cannot answer they will let you know. Better to ask and move on, than worry in silence and waste time.

VD hips is possible in under 6 mins, but does need practice. If college doesn't provide sessions in your SOW or revision days try and get to some elsewhere - ideally at the centre you could sit at. This means you know your way there and little stuff like parking etc, as well as having seen some of their equipment.

Or you could get together with like minded students and practice on days off? I had students who met at each others practices on days off - got to know different equipment and also learned to critique and examine each other.

NB - I am the Clinical Skills Tutor at CAW and an examiner! Vested interest in offering revision courses - but many are available.

[/quote]

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with the comment regarding folding the packaging. I was failed as I quote ' the examiner did not consider it neat'. The stick down fold was done satisfactory and it was the fact that I folded the packet that was the issue. I did extensive research and also checked with my lecturers at college and we could not find any information that suggested that by folding over the first package to fit it into the second packet, that the steam would not penetrate. I stated this in my appeal which is why they stated the fail was due to neatness, not that the package would impair sterilisation. Everyone I have shown my appeal response to, including my manager, head nurse and lecturers have all said that it is ridiculous and quote 'nit picking'. Hence I still feel extremely frustrated.

Re: City and guilds OSCE's

Are any of you getting OSCE prep at college? I just had a bit of a panic and rushed through everything, thinking the sooner I was out of the booth, the better... this was not the case!

I did my re-sit in November and I passed. When you first go in the booth just take in everything; look at what equipment/materials are available and just go over in your mind again what you are going do. If you do a mistake, tell the examiner and redo. Take your time- if you finish before the 6mins are up; just think/check over what you have done before you leave the station incase of any mistakes.

I too did all the calculations first like Kerry, just mainly to get them out of the way. :)

Good Luck Kerry and Stacy!

Re: City and guilds OSCE's

Oh wow! Here are my top tips based on my experience and feed back on why they failed me!

practice against the clock! Positioning for a hip score and having to write kennel club and microchip numbers down in 6 minutes is impossible in my opinion! Also the x ray machines don't move so you have to move the cassette!

if packaging instruments don't fold the bag when double bagging! They failed me on this as they said it was not neat!?!

I found doing calculation parts first best

take a bottle of water to sip in between stations- I was not aware I could do this and was dying of dehydration due to nerves!

I will be re sitting mine in July, good luck!
