I seem to prefer to kneel on my left knee at work when dealing with large dogs on the floor etc. And it is taking it's toll. It often seems to bruise for no reason and can get very painful and sometimes swells

Re: Kneeling

Brilliant! Having been told by the physio that i was suffering from house maid's knee he recommended volly ball knee pads worn under neath my trousers when ever kneeling.

Unfortunatly vollyball knee pad's aren't that easy to get on and off not to mention make you walk like John Wayne, so instead i purchased some neopreme gardener's knee pads made by burgon and ball (available from amazon) and i have to say they are excellent.

I leave them in the prep room side and put them on when ever i'm likely to be on my hands and knees, they go in the washing machine, dry quickly and even come in bottle green colour so don't stand out too much when i stroll into the consult room wearing them! Although i still sometime's get the odd flare up of knee pain, they have greatly reduced the swelling and associated issues i was having and would def recommend you give them a try. Being neopreme they are flexible too so don't ping off everytime you kneel.

Re: Kneeling

I was hoping a knee pad would help prevent it.

Re: Kneeling

Funny cuz I was thinking it sounded like bursitis so I think it's worth considering that it could be related to the new strain you place on the knee at the new place. Could be the old injury is back!

Re: Kneeling

I had prepatellar bursitis on it a few years ago. But hadn't had a problem since. Not sure whether it is related or not. I changed jobs a couple of months ago, from a wildlife hospital to domestic practice. The techniques are very different in handling obviously, so I think I am kneeling more, and I guess habit makes me drop to the same knee each time!

Would it be worthwhile seeing your GP? If as you say you have used that knee for a long time maybe would be a good idea to see if something has changed that is making it more likely to bruise. Once your GP confirms it is just chronic use, would it be possible to kneel on the other one for a few months just to give the other a rest?

Another idea is a gardeners kneel pad that you could just keep in the ward and use when dealing with the bigger patients. Let us know how you get on!
