Hiya,

I am leaving for Oz on the 26th Nov on a working holiday visa and staying with a friend for the first few weeks. How do I go about being registered over there? Is it like the RCVS and how much would it be/how long would it take if so?

If you are on a 457 visa you will have to be paid the minimum wage set by the government which is currently $54000 plus superannuation. No additional qualifications, but am heading to another head nurse role with a bigger team, so the salary can be justified to the immigration department. If your heading to Aus on your partners 457 salaries vary from around $18- 25 per hour as I remember.

Hi Laura, we are selling everything and starting afresh when we get there, only thing we are taking is the dog!

We are heading to the Gold Coast, QLD :)

Ill be honest, we have also had thoughts about if this is the right move, but with a higher salary, better work/life balance we feel it would be silly to turn down the opportunity to at least try.

Hi I am also planning on a move to oz and in process of getting my 457 visa:) where abouts are you going to be living? I am so nervous about the move, even been having a few second thoughts if its for me, could I ask. Are u planning on buying new home furniture out there or shipping any items? Thanks Laura

Completely agree with the above. Do it all yourself, its not difficult as immi.gov have all the info you need.

I leave on Wednesday on a 457 visa for four years (with intentions to convert to residency) and I done all the visa leg work myself, not an agent in sight! So if anyone needs any help feel free to PM me. I worked there in 2008 on a working visa and getting work is easy if your happy to work and travel. I had a job before I left, but when I was looking to move around I found a job very easily.

Do the visa online yourself!!! Companies will charge you a fortune!! And yes 650 sounds about right and you need 3,500 in your bank as well to prove that you can get yourself home if you didn't get a job!

I arranged a job before I came out! Where in Australia do you want to head?

I'm currently working in Oz on a working holiday visa, as has already been said you can work out here as a vet nurse as long as you aren't employed by the same company for more than 6 months. I arranged everything myself but I stayed with a friend the first month I as here whereas the companies that sort everything usually put you up in accommodation for the first week as well. It was easy enough to sort everything. I didn't have a job arranged before I got out here.

Vet nursing locum positions seem sporadic - there are sometimes loads of different positions, sometimes no new ones will hit the websites for a couple of weeks. The two main places are vetlink and kookaburra, although Provet will occasionally put some jobs up.

Awww thanks that's awesome news!! Can I ask how did you go about getting your visa? There are so many companies who say they do it for you and the woman I spoke to said its £650 does that sound right? And did u arrange a job for when u arrived? Sorry for all the questions I'm not sure where to start lol xx

Hey there!

I've been working in Australia for 11months now and only worked as a vet nurse!! As long as you're not with the same company for more than 6 months then a working holiday visa is fine!!

I don't know why they're saying different?!

Hi there I am a vet nurse wanting to go to Australia as soon as I can . .I have spoken to an immigration advisor who said that I couldn't work as a vet nurse on a working holiday visa. . .I'm a bit confused. . .she said I had to apply for a skilled visa to work as a vet nurse which is 5-6k . . does anyone know much about visas and if that is right??

Thanks Nichola, that's really helpful. I thought the choices may be limited in terms of food for them but at least I can gradually change them over whilst I'm here....and Petplan it is. We are going to be West so I don't think paralysis ticks are not a problem there but correct me if I'm wrong. Really appreciate your reply x

Hi! Congratulations on the big move. I did the opposite (trained as cert iv vet nurse in oz then came here). A lot of the drugs are the same (vetmedin, fortekor, metacam, acp, alfaxan, etc) parasite control is different as the parasites are different but also the same if you see what I mean (eg advocate is the same but important as used to prevent heartworm), advantage, advantix (important cos of paralysis tick but depends whereabouts you're based) milbemax, stronghold is called revolution i think? There's also a chewy tablet called sentinel for fleas and worms that I used on my dogs. Food wise I fed mine Eukanuba or Hills.... I think there was less choice over there in terms of small food companies. Insurance is like here... The only bothering with is pet plan! There's a great Aussie company called Snooza... They make dog and cat beds, highly recommend them. Hope that helps a bit! Good luck!
