This is my first ever post here.
Was wondering if anyone could help me. My dog (lab x gsd so doomed for joints) is currently having underwater treadmill therapy for hip dyplasia, she has intermittent bilateral lameness of the hindlegs

Re: Water Treadmill - Help

Many thanks to you guys for replying.

Yes Brian Sharp is great I really enjoyed my weekend course and can't wait for the next ones to come along. How long you got hayley till your a qvn? it'll soon fly by i'm sure.

Thought I'd give you guys an update in the saga.

My dog finally went for a referal to Davies and they weren't sure at first whether it is true spinal or hips with her mild intermittent symptoms. MRI scan revealed she has very mild dengerative disc disease at the lumbar sacral area and to continue conservative treatment as I am.

Regards to hydro as long as she continues to have good muscle mass, no need to continue at present.

I did a weekend massage/ physio course with him. Dont worry I dont claim to be a physio!!! It taught me how to do the massage and stretches for athritis etc but dont really do it in practice. I mainly use it on my own dog as we do Flyball together.

Just gave me the urge to go into it further which I cant do until I qualify!! gives me something to aim for though!!!

Re: Water Treadmill - Help

Sussex Canine centre run an

"Advanced Award in Canine Hydrotherapy OCN
Level 3 Certificate"

Here is there website - http://www.caninecourses.net/default.html

Have a look at this site and you will see what to expect. There are also 2 places I can recommend to talk to -

Torrington Orthopaedics - 0845 6008346 (ask to speak to a hydro nurse)

They have dedicated fully qualified hydrotherapy VN's, and a fully qualified physiotherapist.

Aquavet - 0114 230 4555 (ask to speak to Leonie Hedland)

They have dedicated fully qualified hydrotherapy VN's.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for the repsonse.

I know many people aren't qualified enough to perform these things alot of the time. It is a tricky area physio/hydro. Therapist has done an intensive physio course and teaches hydro. But I couldn't tell you the exact qualifications, I don't think it is the university of tennesses ( you get the guist of what I 'm trying to spell) The one that qualifies you as a certified canine rehab practioner.

The treadmill is in my veterinary practice. My ortho vet is performing the hydro, this is why want other peoples input so I can go with some kind of evidence it's not normal. Possible causes etc.

I too looked at both the physio courses diploma and uten one. They are so expensive. But saying that I have enrolled on the new canine therapist course through cpd solutions. Should be good it's by Brian Sharp i'm looking forward to it.

Re: Water Treadmill - Help

Snap tie Ians hands down he beat me to the reply l was to slow

Re: Water Treadmill - Help

If there is something not right about a dog post treatment then it needs discussing with a proper ortho vet surgeon. (as opposed to just a general vet) Even if one recommended you go to where you are l would still go back and discuss the problem.

I do not know how qualified your "therapist" is but chances are they have only done a minor course at best. There is very few fully qualifed animal therapists it tends to be a term used a lot a bit like "veterinary nurse" by people that do not hold the qualification but work at a vet's. I looked at doing the full physio course course a few years ago and it was about 7k then.

Re: Water Treadmill - Help

Who's your therapist and are they qualified ?

If they are qualified is it to NVQ level ?

Is the treadmill part of a vets or a seperate entity ?

I ask all this becuase if they arent properly trained then they could be doing it wrong. Once I knwo all this I should be able to put you in touch with someone who can answer your questions.

thanks
