I am looking to start a veterinary nursing course at the college of animal welfare in Leeds next year. I have read so many stories about the difficulties of finding a training practice placement, and this is starting to give me doubts about

Re: full time training help!

Hi Mark

Thanks for the reply. I think my grades are fine, I have a degree in a relevant field and all the required GCSEs. I am more concerned about not being able to find a placement. I have read many tales of students on the full time route having to leave the course as they were never given a placement or lost the placement half way through.

I am nervous to give up my nice salary for a course that I may have to leave before I even begin! But I really want to become a veterinary nurse!!! I guess I am seeking reassurance that this is the right decision for me, but perhaps I will never know unless I try...

All our courses are heavily oversubscribed, so it's a matter of making your application as strong as possible.

http://www.caw.ac.uk/courses/strengthening-your-application-level-3-diploma-in-veterinary-nursing/ is a link with advice (this is a CAW link, but the advice is useful for students applying for vet nursing places at other colleges as well!) - as for where to apply, this is really a very individual question - no two students are alike, and no two practices are alike! For getting work experience they don't need to be a Training Practice, but for the actual course they do need to be a Training Practice. Remember you'll be travelling to class weekly, so you'll want to make sure it's not too far or too expensive for travel.

Don't be discouraged if your grades aren't perfect; if you don't get onto the VN diploma you could go for the VCA (veterinary care assistant) diploma, which is a pre-vet nursing course. (VCA placements don't have to be in a Training Practice.)

Kind regards,

Thanks for your reply! How many places are there on the full time course at Leeds? And do you know of any practices in this area that it would be most worthwhile volunteering at? Do most of the students on the full time course end up finding their own practices, or are your team usually successful in finding all students a place?

Many thanks!

http://www.caw.ac.uk/courses/veterinary-nursing/level-3-diploma-in-veterinary-nursing-course/

CAW does have a placement service that helps getting a Training Practice placement for accepted students. You're quite right, finding a TP can be a challenge but we do our best to help. Applications for September 2015 are not yet open but keep an eye on the website for updates.

Kind regards,
