(as the main use is a big surge to start the car engine ). I only had to charge my leisure battery every 2-3 months rather than fortnightly with the car one. Car batteries can damage the energiser over time as again the power surge is too high. Very important point is after charging any battery, leave it for half an hour to settle before clipping it onto the fence to avoid damaging the energiser . Make sure the fence is not shorting out by touching any long grass and you must have an earth stake if the energiser does not come with one. Electric Shepherd + Fenceman are 2 good makes for horses, cost from about 60 pounds to 200 depending on how much zap you need to stop your horse from trying his luck on pushing through the fence.

Hope this helps, had a lifetime of working with electric fences....( usually on a very windy day !!) lol.

Re: electric fence help

we use a leisure battery and a enegiser that clips on the fence.
I use this one.

I went to my local car garage and asked for a used car battery that still had a bit of charge. They sold it to me for £10. I have two of them. You can buy trickle charges on ebay for about £15 and keep one on permanent charge.

I run about 100 - 120m of electric fencing with this combination. I change over batteries about once every two months.

Cheaper would be a grazing muzzle though! I am just gearing up to fit one of those as mine is already a bit fat!
