Is anyone currently studying this course? I am wanting some advise on good books to use for my studies as I have been advised I need to read more around the subject and referencing. Any suggestions would be much appreciated .

Re: Diploma in Feline Nursing

Hi Hayley, are there any books etc that you would recommend getting before the diploma?

Re: Diploma in Feline Nursing

I'm just waiting to hear if my practice will pay for me to do the certificate

Re: Diploma in Feline Nursing

Hi, my colleague has set this up on my behalf. I have done the certificate and I am currently completing the diploma. I would say that it is definitely not too basic as I have done a lot of cat CPD and I'm familiar with the cat friendly practice protocol etc so have some back ground knowledge. There is a lot of reading around to do and I am learning a lot. It can be quite time consuming at times as some of the questions can take some reading around before you can answer them. I did initially feel like I didn't know how much to write etc but usually they expect quite in depth answers with references. They give feedback once you have submitted a work book and there are people to email if you need any advice. You can also chat to other students on the course. I hope this has been helpful, if you would like any more info please don't hesitate to ask.

I've got Martha Cannon's feline nursing book too, it's one of my favourites and great as a quick-reference for practical techniques. For something utterly comprehensive and for background knowledge, I always head straight to The Feline Patient by Norsworthy et al, however I don't think it's been updated since 2011 (and it's American), but it makes up for it in sheer volume. There hasn't been anything that I've looked up that hasn't been in there. The BSAVA behavioural medicine manual is very useful too.

Hope that helps.

How are you finding the course, those of you who are on it now? I was keen when it first launched, but feedback initially was quite poor - hopefully things are improving over time..? It must have been running for a couple of years now. The initial concerns were that content was too basic and students would have liked more support/communication.

Re: Diploma in Feline Nursing

I think the icatcare website is pretty good (previously fab cats of the isfm) especially for owner education etc. if the clinic where you work becomes a feline friendly practice through their scheme, I'm sure you get a heap of resources and journals etc that really focus on feline care needs and changing stances on feline medicine :)

Re: Diploma in Feline Nursing

Great thanks for your help will pass this information onto my colleague

Re: Diploma in Feline Nursing

Hi Kerry,

I am doing the Diploma at the moment as well. So far I have found these books helpful:-

BSAVA Feline Practice Manual

BSAVA Canine & Feline Advanced Veterinary Nursing

Anaesthesia for Veterinary Nurses by Liz Welsh.

Cat Sense by John Bradshaw

Also some of the Vet Times, VN Times and BVNA Journals, Webinar vets, Drug companies also have a lot of info on their websites now which can help with info such as vaccine, worming and flea advice, all the I catcare handouts have some good info as well

Hope this helps, I also google as much as I can and then look up articles.
