Left out be very careful a year with the same place it is quite possible HMRC will decide you work for the practice and trouble hits all round. Suggest it is sorted sooner rather than later. If they get in volved you and practice have no say in anything.

Sounds really stressful! I am a self-employed locum - I use an accountant to do all my tax etc as I wouldn't have a clue (I was recommended the accountant by a friend who had used them previously). So far I have had no problems - the end of the tax year was straight forward and I just did what my accountant told me to do! The only company who won't take me on as I am self-employed are Vets Now but as I said I have had no problems with any other corporate companies including CVS. I hope this helps! :)

sorry to jump onto this thread but I have been in permenant positions all my career (15 years) and am now thinking of going locuming, I was wondering, are there any agency's to avoid?

Is it likely to cost to have a meeting just to test the water? Also in your experience if I'm on the low end of the income scale and not running up much in way of expenses is it actually worth the expense (although I'm guessing if I tot up what I lose to the umbrella company I'm guessing it may not work out all that much more?)

Hi, the practice won't put me on their payroll (presumably because then I'd be entitled to things like holidays and sick pay oh and they don't want to have to pay any employers NI either I don't think). Even though I've been there a while I'm still only temporary.

I work under my own ltd company and wouldnt do it any other way.

You need to find a local chartered acct and have a meeting to discuss all you have to do to afford and be legal. It is not like the old days but some things to bear in mind.

It is expensive as you need to have a chartered accountant to do your yearly rtn not you or regular accountant.

You need to save enough for corporation tax

New rules have just come into force regards directors pay, if it isnt enough you need to take extra out as a dividend.

It is a company not self employed which means you need a different mindset and you do not just take money it has to be accounted for. Yes self emp have to account but the parameters are a lot different.....see above regards dividend being just one.

It is not hard just more expensive and a different mindset.

can you not just let the practice payroll do your PAYE . Speak to HR or practice manager and see what they say
