I have taken on a stray cat that was on death row. He's massively hyperthyroid (so much so that he was started on 5mg felimazole BID straight away) but everything else was fine.
In the clinic he was a lovely friendly

Re: Rescue cat driving me crazy

If you put him on Royal Canin senior food it has the equivalent of Aktivat in it. Feliway or zylkene is worth a try!
I think it is always harder when you don't have a life long bond with a pet. I have looked after friends pets and they have drove me mad. They have probably felt the same when they have looked after my demanding dog!!

Re: Rescue cat driving me crazy

[quote user="emmadilemma"]

Maybe part of the issue is that you took him on late in life and haven`t really bonded with him properly which might make it harder to put up with his behaviour? One of mine is very demanding and vocal (and doesn`t believe that i should be allowed to sleep) but he`s been part of my life for 15 years and while it can be very frustrating, i love him dearly so would never dream of rehoming him or worse..

Is he an indoor cat? Maybe he`s bored and isn`t getting enough stimulation or natural cat type activities to keep him content. You could try playing with him with toys which would tire him out a bit plus might help with the bonding process.

Maybe under the circumstances a new home might suit him better especially if you could find an elderly person or someone who can spend a lot of time with him.

Hi

Thanks for your comments, I will try all of this although I've gotten him toys and tried to play but he's not all that inteterested. I just worry about letting him outside in case he doesn't remember where he's suposed to be!

I may have a new home for him if I continue to pay the medication costs which I am happy to do because obviously I don't want to PTS him but if I can't get him to a point where he's happy in a home I really don't see any other option. There's no way a rescue centre would rehome him

Re: Rescue cat driving me crazy

Wow.

If you're a vet or a nurse I feel sorry for your clients.

Thank you for your help which came with a side helping of judgement. I will try the Activait and yes I had considered that his mental function was impaired but had no idea what to try.

Hence the post.

I have never had elderly pets before so I have never dealt with this and with over two months of broken sleep I'm afraid my patience is wearing a little thin.

Sorry.

Have you considered that, if he is elderly, he may have cognitive dysfunction? It's relatively common in older cats and is a little like Alzheimers. My elderly cat had it and he would yowl randomly, often at night, and his behaviour became odd, he would often seem "detached". It might be worth trying one of the supplements like Aktivait if this is a possibility.

With my cat, I felt able to put up with it because I felt sorry for him, he was old, and he couldn't help what was happening to him.

I apologise if I come across as unsympathetic to you, but I'm afraid your post does not give a very sympathetic impression.
