I have a few questions about restraint and your opinions on some matters. I have been working at this small animal clinic since November

Re: Restraint Questions

Hehe!

Re: Restraint Questions

Brilliant Mrs D, I love that suggestion of reverse roleplay, I am storing that for future twat vets

Re: Restraint Questions

PS... The guy sounds like a real T**t! What is it with them? Do you really want to carry on working for him? Are you locuming or permanent? Anyone with anything about them, any consideration for anyone else, other than themselves, should realise what you are going thru! You should do abit of role play.....You ought to put the table up as high as it will go, borrow a Rottie (? ST's?) or a Great Dane and then get him to hold while you are standing on an orange box equivalent and do a nurse dental check! Any vet that expects a nurse to hold all animals on the table, regardless of size of animal or size of nurse, hasn't got a clue! I find that when doing nurse appts, I always let the dog of the lead to make them feel happier by them sniffing around, then more often than not I get down to their level...... There are occassions when they need to be on the table, but if they are happier on the floor, why not?!!!

Just realised I'm ranting! Sorry! But...............................

Anyway, try talking to him first.... that's the mature thing to do, and don't follow my example of ranting!! Good luck!

Re: Restraint Questions

now where has that dickhead smilie went???

If we are inducing anaesthesia in big dogs we do it on the floor with them on a stretcher them put them on the table once asleep.

your boss cant expect you to restrain like this and its sad to hear that it is really affecting your work so much, definately talk to him, is he the kind of boss who will take it into consideration or will he just pay no attention to your suggestions??

Re: Restraint Questions

Tuesday actually I'm off Monday :) But I have a lot of good ammo for my conversation.

Any vet that insists on whatever size dog being placed onto a table regardless is a ***. Sensible vets judge their patient and size and do not insist an animal is put onto a table. As to not looking a prat he deserves to if that is his attitude. Oh by the way l agree with all the above.

We work on the principle that the one holding the dog should be comfortable and therefore the table is at their height. You can hurt yourself permanently if the dog decides to take a leap & you're off balance. Tell the vet to stop being a w****r

[/quote]

Here here fi, thats my motto too, If I am not comfortable with it, then it gets done my way, I am not wracking my back for anyone, If you are the one holding then you as far as I am concerned are the one who decides where and how the dog is positioned.

I also agree your vet is being a wanker

Re: Restraint Questions

We work on the principle that the one holding the dog should be comfortable and therefore the table is at their height. You can hurt yourself permanently if the dog decides to take a leap & you're off balance. Tell the vet to stop being a w****r

Re: Restraint Questions

Hi I am short too, and our vet very tall but we never put big dogs on the table as I cannot reach to restrain them adequately and safely, and he also feels many dogs settle better on the floor. I actually strained a tendon in my toe by standing on tiptoes in a previous practice and I still suffer with it now.
Hi there, I think you have to have a word with your boss if you feel uncomfortable. My rule is I never, NEVER EVER put my face near an animal (if I can help it anyway). I work by the theory that if I get bitten on the arm/ hand well then it drops off and I have another to get me by in life, however, getting bitten on your face/ neck and thats a whole different story. So far I've been unscathed in the face department haha so maybe there is method in my madness?!

Insist on muzzles and an extra pair of hands to help you restrain and if your suffering physically as a direct result of someone then kick up a stink about it! I'm vertically challenged at a grand height of 5' and a fart, I don't know how tall you are but if you don't feel safe then say something before you have an accident

Re: Restraint Questions

just a quickie as working answer this lot later but sorry bad spelling it is gone 5am and work all night
