I think its up to the practice whether you get paid or not,I am in Scotland so it might be different here. Students used to get paid but the last 2 that did took 6 years to qualify! So maybe thats why they dont get paid now x

My last post was based on the RCVSs website. http://awardingbody.rcvs.org.uk/employers/how-to-become-a-training-practice/#cost . Hoping it correct otherwise I probably won't be able to afford to become one at all.

Our SVNs dont get paid, they get a bursary from college x

..... and what you are prepared to accept - nobody is forcing anybody to work for nothing or peanuts. There are many jobs out there paying minimum wage - not just this one.

I am doing the day release, am 24 years old and get just over min wage. I have heard of students getting min wage, apprenticeship and nothing at all!

I know of a few students on block placements that work voluntarily and don't get paid at all.

Think it just depends on what the practice is willing to pay you?

Thanks for the link. Have read through it and the rcvs website and it would appear that as I am over 19 I don't class as an apprentice, and should receive minimum wage.

somebody mentioned apprenticeships - how many people realise that the minimum wage for an apprentice aged between 16 and 18 (or those aged 19 and over but in the first year of apprenticeship) is only £2.68 an hour?

Now I wonder why they dropped the minimum age for student vet nurses?

After you hit 19 and have completed a full years apprenticeship it goes up to the minimum wage.

Apprenticeships if you are only going to get minimum wage should be a last resort unless you have wealthy parents or some other means of financial support.

I did the block release route, going to college for a few weeks at a time three times a year, and spending the rest of my time in practice. I was on the rota, working a 40 hour week on the same shift pattern as the qualified nurses, but didn't get paid anything, and the practice didn't pay any of my college fees. I would like to think that most practices now would pay at least a small wage (I qualified 6 years ago), but I have no idea what the norm is now.

I have applied for the block release programme at Edinburgh College. The practice is looking into the cost of employing me as a TVN. I thought it would be below minimum wage as they would be paying fees and would have to allow for time at college.

Just really trying to see what other people got paid so I have an idea. As previous TVN at the practice have negotiated their own wage n I really have no idea what is the standard wage for this sort of post.

I would think it would depend on whether the practice take you on as an employee and you can do block release or you go as a full time student on a placement only option and don't go to GUVS if you go to Edinburgh College. Is the practice willing to employ you? Are you finding the course yourself? If they won't take you on there fultime route.

It depends what route you are taking with your training. Degree students often don't get paid and work on a voluntary basis instead. Saying this, there are some employers out there who will pay a small wage. Another option would be an apprenticeship in which you would get paid as an apprentice, not sure what this wage is but I believe it really is very low! There is also a day release college route in which you would work full time hours and go to college one day a week. I would imagine most places would offer minimum wage for this. As far as Ivan gather this is about right, but I apologise is I am wrong on any part. It's been a while since completing my own training!
