I was wondering if anyone may be able to help me. I am a student veterinary nurse and am working in a practice with very few senior staff. We also have a few issues with a particular member of staff and I am starting to lose my confidence

Re: Difficulties at work/staff?

Hi there, most practices do have their issues and I fully understand where you are coming from and what it is like being in a practice with very little staff. Is there anyone there you could speak too? If not what about your college or fellow students on your course. I had to leave my last practice because of very similar issues.I will say i am at a better practice now. I hope it all works out for you.
Hope this helps a little as your not the only one.

Re: Difficulties at work/staff?

Hey

It can be a very difficult situation when there are issues with staff and support. If you don't feel you are getting the support you require and can't talk to senior staff could you speak to a tutor at college to ask them to help on your behalf. The college has a commitment to ensure you get the hours of support your practice has agreed too. Similarly if you are being left to do things without support that should be supervised then they can help. Have you tried talking to your coach/senior staff. As a clinical coach myself I know I would hope my students would feel they could approach me and tell me if there is an issue first. Talking to the staff concerned first would ideally be the best step, it might seem daunting but you may find they are just stressed and actually quite reasonable people. If you are really struggling and need more in depth advice perhaps consider contacting the bvna (if you are not a member I would highly recommend it) they are very friendly and can help talk you through your options.

Most importantly don't give up. I have been nursing 10 years and my training was not always easy, I am now a clinical coach who has supported 3 students (working on the fourth!) through their NPL. I was determined to help my students avoid the troubles I had in my training and I love watching them thrive. I am sure you will become a great nurse so do not loose confidence in your own ability. And if the issues cannot be resolved perhaps look to move on and rebuild your self belief. I wish you luck and strength to get through this situation and I know (from experience) you will become a better nurse from dealing with it even if it doesn't seem so now.

My email is luckypupp@hotmail.com if you want to talk things through further
