I am considering applying to uni and am considering vet nursing (sadly my GCSE's aren't quite good enough for vet school but I think I would prefer the nursing side of things anyway).

I am currently doing the FdSc at harper adams and I am really enjoying it. I found my first year placement myself, but harper helped people who didn't manage to and they helped me find my sandwich year placement that I am about to start :) It seems that employability is very similar to the BSc degree, so I don't think it would be a problem. I thought it was a good option as it meant that I was able to train as a vet nurse more easily than finding a training place for the diploma as from what I have heard they are very difficult to find!!

Hope this helps a little, if you have questions I will happily answer them.

Best of luck :D

Re: FDSc Veterinary Nursing - good option?

I did most of my training at Plumpton many moons ago......

Re: FDSc Veterinary Nursing - good option?

Well I trained at plumpton as the person above and started with 2 weeks experience in a vets. I did however get offered a place at RVC but Plumpton is very close for me. I went in with alevels and found the course on par in the first 2 years and 3rd a step up. I did my work experience after interview when I was offered a place but only if I got my grades and did work experience. I believe they now find you a practice to train in which is great but they just need to see your driven and really want the nursing profession.

Re: FDSc Veterinary Nursing - good option?

Thanks Ilovethebug. Did you work in a vets before hand? I'm debating whether to apply this year or spend a year trying to get some more experience before applying.

I've got a fair bit of animal care experience; my parents breed dogs and I've helped with many whelpings, matings and hand feeding. I've worked in livery yards, and currently work as a dog walker. I've done lots of dog training, including dog behaviour, the BHS horse owners courses, and I'm doing a canine massage course. I'm not sure if I have enough experience though? Any tips?

Re: FDSc Veterinary Nursing - good option?

I completed the FDsc and have now been employed as head nurse. Thank you for replying.

I am just waiting to hear back from the college to see if my qualifications are ok to apply. Is it different from the diploma for placement? I have had real trouble funding a training job or placement. Did you have to have to sort the placement out yourself?

I started out nursing on an FdSc course at plumpton college. It was brill. 2 days in practice and 3 days at college 2nd yeat full time practice and last year same as first. i found it a nice mix of both practice and college life. i only completed the first year due to funding issues from SLC (had been on a prev degree) my college found my placement for me. only down side is you are not paid for your time in practice, you can apply for student loan. I say go for it!

Good Luck
