Thanks for the help regarding CPD. I signed up for the online CPD, its very handy.

Also, I became a member of the BVNA where you get monthly journals, The Veterinary Nurse Journal. Would that classify as undocumented cpd?

Hi 5 hours is the limit for *undocumented* cpd - http://www.rcvs.org.uk/education/cpd-for-vns/#counts

So basically you can do 5 hours of journal reading, online article reading, or even vetnurse.co.uk forum or vet nurse times and it counts; you don't have to list the exact documents and resources you used.

Anything above that, you need to identify and document your CPD. So if you've done a course that takes 5 hours, write down exactly what the course is and what it covered; possibly attaching an outline or making a note of the publisher. That's documenting your CPD. (Even better: add an attendance certificate, if possible.)

A day course or webinar is documented CPD because you get a certificate of attendance, not because a particular company or college offers it. (Naturally they'd be keeping records of attendees.).

Interestingly, CPD requirements in the USA (They call it CE) are more strict than in the UK.

It does depend on the type of distance learning - so an accredited course, or one where you were assessed, may come under a different category to just watching a webinar, say. It is a little bit woolly! If you're not sure which category a course comes under, I would just email the nursing department and ask.

Can I recommend the online VN-PDR facility on the RCVS website. It really is great - you can log all the CPD activities you do, add your certificates, and have everything stored in the same place. It also makes it really easy to 'share' with others, for example, a prospective or current employer (we have to show our CPD records - V4P). YOu can find the register/login page here. Once you've registered, it's dead easy to login and go and add courses/reading/any CPD that you've done.

5 hours distance learning/home study reading journals etc or doing assignments, your online CPD courses don't count as that :)

if you only registered this year your CPD counts from this year (it runs Jan to Jan)

You will find that 45 hours soon adds up. technically it's 15hours a year. so if you do 2 evening meetings, 1 full day that is probably about 10-11 hours (depending how long the full day is) then add your online stuff on and there you go.
