In England the law only requires that a docked puppy is microchipped by twelve weeks of age.

Absolutely. I found this out at a previous practice. The pups who were microchipped at 1st vac - quite a few of them didnt turn up for 2nd vac (even if the 2nd vacc had been pre paid, which to me was really strange). Another reason we use for chip at 2nd vacc is that the pup is that bit bigger.

I have also heard it said at one place I locumed that if you chip at 2nd vacc it gives the new owner time to change their mind if they find the pup isnt what they were looking for and to return it without the hassle of having to pay for a chip and then having to change ownership details - shocked me a bit but I know it does happen. I cant say that it would be the advice I would be giving to the owner of a new addition to the family, its almost inviting them to return it for a refund

Technically you can do it at any age but I think most people would do at 2nd vacc as if done at first then sometimes less of a reason for client to come back!

We don't usually do them at 1st vac as we think it's a bit much with vac and a little larger needle, so promote 2nd vac

We chip a week after 2nd vac or week in between 1st & 2nd.

we have had a ckcs puppy brought in for vet check at 6wks old (purchased from a puppy farm ) that had already been microchipped. We usually chip at 2nd vacc.
