And you'll know straight away which one to you etc

Don't over think it. I'm sure you know your stuff

Re: osces march 2014

People get really hung up on this! Its a minor step so unlikely to fail you the task!

Your college should have feedback from previous sitters and know what they teach. Can you ask them again as it may just have got confused when relayed to you?

Nothing wrong with suggestions above.

Yellow for SC ABs as viscuous and it is on the Clam LA data sheet to mot use less then 20g to admin

Therefore for horse IM could be green 1 inch or yellow

dog IM I know people who gotm100% with orange needle.

However most people fail on the calculation or resheathing the needle so practice those!

Re: osces march 2014

Haha i wpuld but my college dont really know themselves which is so helpful!

This is just what I've been told by my tutors, I would go with what you've been told at college x

Re: osces march 2014

Oh god now im comfuses cuz i dont have a set answer..i thort green 1inch...so can be green or white?

Re: osces march 2014

I've been told the following:

Equine IM

18g (pink) or

19g (white)

Small animal SC

21g (green) or

20g (yellow)

Small animal IM

23g (blue)

Cat blood sample

21g (green)

It all depends on what is offered on the day I think. I was told 21g for the cat blood sample but if that's not there then to go for 20g (yellow). This is what my college has told me, however I went on a revision course and they told me slightly different so it doesn't seem as though there is an exact rule.

Good luck in your exam. x

Re: osces march 2014

Thank you, you said the needles i thought so that makes me feel better :) but does anyone know what needles should be used for the horse inj?
1 week to go ahhhhh

Re: osces march 2014

Hi Kelly,

All depends on the drug used, the Data Sheet requirements (some are specific which needle to use) and what reason the needle is used for... so;

- for a suspension/viscous drug such as Amoxycillin (or the 'lookee-likee' white stuff you get at an OSCE that is supposed to be Amox!) you need the wider bore yellow needle (20g) as this is (was? - I can't locate the exact Data Sheet at the moment) the requirement per the Data Sheets for this drug.

- for a blood sample; you need the 22G green needle as it has a larger bore than the 24G blue and therefore does not haemolyse the RBC's (or reduces the chance of haemolysis). Also, the blood flows more quickly during collection than with a smaller bore...handy, as tardiness means possibility of clotting...

- for a drug such as Buprenorphine ('Vetergesic') you would use the 24G blue needle as i) the drug isn't viscous (such as e.g. meloxicam is) and b) a smaller needle is less painful for the patient.

Hope this helps.
