I may need a second job for more pay as I live on my own but I'm only a 1st yr student. I don't want my studies to suffer due to working more hours plus would anyone take a first year student part time?

Re: Second job

When i was a student VN I also worked in a bar, I was lucky that the bar was very flexible so i could just say yes or no to shifts so when things got busy study wise i cut my hours working part time. It does take some organising to have a second job but if your clever with your time it doesn't have to harm your studies. It is true that you will have to pay tax at the basic rate for your second job but if you haven't gone over the tax treshold you will be able to claim the tax you did pay for the second job back at the end of that tax year.

Re: Second job

Hi,

Don't forget that if you work a second job you'll be taxed at a higher rate (I think, I have no real knowledge of this so check it out thoroughly yourself first) and depending on the amount of hours you do it may or may not even make it worth it - see if you can find someone more clued up than me to do the sums for you first - you don't want to knock yourself out working all hours and possibly jeopardise your studies for an extra £25 take-home pay ... (Sorry, that all sounds very negative! Just be careful! :) )
you are right a second job is taxed at a higher rate
That's not quite right. You would only be charged at the higher rate for the portion of the earnings that took you into the higher rate of tax bracket. In all likelihood, unless you plan to have a second job earning you about 30k, this won't affect you. They will take you at basic rate on all that you earn in that second job - but not national insurance unless you exceed the threshold for national insurance in that second job. Therefore, unless you are earning more than about £95pw (pro rata'd upwards for monthly pay) (figures may vary slightly as I cannot remember what the current NI threshold is!), you can expect to lose about 20% of your 2nd job's earnings.

Re: Second job
If you are seriously looking for a second job my advice would be to find a job like shelf stacking - it will probably pay you better. If you do decide to work for another practice as a second job it might not be that easy - as a general rule practices can be a bit precious about their prices and routines etc and probably wont want somebody from a neighbouring practice working with them (cant imagine a current boss being too thrilled about it either if I am honest)

Good luck whatever you decide
