we had somebody from the local college needing work experience so they could complete their VCA last year. For the first month or so I limited our contact or I would have done them a serious injury - then one day they came out with

'you dont like students do you?

my reply

'not strictly true I was one myself one day - but what I really cant stand is somebody who comes for work experience and their 'experience' consists of watching me working my a**e off. If somebody is interested in learning I will take the time to help them as much as I can but they have to show me they are interested - if they cant be bothered neither can I'

We got along fine after that. In fact I reckon he will make somebody a really good nurse

and I had to smile when I heard them telling another WE just before Christmas ' make sure you look busy and make sure the sinks are kept clean - she likes to be able to see her face in them, she takes a bit of getting used to but she isnt that bad - she's not as bad as my mother'

Well if she ever does get into vet school she will soon be shouted down and she will realise that she has the wrong attitude.

It's a shame that there are some young people like this.

We had one school work exp student that thought we anaesthetised dogs with milk, thought the C02 cannister on the anaesthetic machine held bird food and touched the sterile drape as the vet was unfolding it! haha

We have had some excellent work experience but never have I been spoken to the way this one did. She is also of the opinion that she does not need work experience to get into vet school!

We have had quite a few difficult work exp students that have come from a school. We now only take them if they are at college doing some kind of animal care diploma.

Even then we've had some awful ones. A couple of years ago we had a lad who kept crying all the time and one of the other nurses found him in a room upstairs with his trousers round his ankles fiddling with himself. We recently had a girl that wouldnt talk to anyone and when we sent her round the corner to iceland to get something she seemed to be gone for about an hour and we had to send someone to find her.

We have however had some lovely ones that have gone on to do very well. But school ones seem to be more difficult to deal with so we no longer take them anymore. Its a shame really because they need the experience to find out if this is what they want to do.

We have had some great work experience students over the years - I know two have gone on to qualify as vets and one as a Doctor

We are now very picky and interview them first. We had one butting in the consults with his opinions, one who lay in reception asleep and one who wrote in his diary that nurses just stand around watching the vets!!! I have to say the manners of some of these students is shocking. Interviewing does weed out the worst but we still get the odd strange one - we had one who danced and pirouetted around the practice!!

Waste of time! We have sent them home before, I think it a massive problem with young people who think they know every thing after two seconds and schools inputting the fact that you should question every thing with out all the facts. (Same problem with a lot not all, of the degree/fast track nurse) As for grades don't think they count for much, look how many people apply for so many places at uni. Ive worked with a Rvc lecturer who did admission interviews and she told one work experience that grade were good but most people can get an A now, so you need to stand out by experience and personality.

It frustrates me that a few bad students results in a complete ban. I would never have got my job without work experience and a lot of animal courses require it to pass them. How do you expect anyone to get into the veterinary field when people are of the opinion that they don't have time for them. Sure some will not be great but it's nice when you get someone really enthusiastic and willing to help.

We don't take them for that very reason! No time or patience for them
