Study time per week varied, once electing a module, the scheme of work provides a plan of what either reading/activity or information you should be looking at on a week by week basis. Some weeks there will be set topics to go over (this depending on the module) and some others will be further reading - or case discussion. so on average 1 - 2 hours a week, obv when assignments were set and exams were coming up more - but I mainly revised throughout and worked on my assignments on a weekend (I have a strong work/life ethic!! I would dedicate a saturday to uni work and then spend sunday with loved ones : )! ). It is dependent on the module, some have a lighter workload than others - but I found it worked well alongside work and family : )

Hope this helps xxx

Re: Dip AVN Advanced Veterinary Nursing

[quote user="caroline bromley"]

Hi Abi,

I have just completed the DipAVN at Harper and loved it - so much so I am topping up to the BSc! Not sure about accreditation and the RVC - I am pretty sure that the RCVS do recognise it at the RVC, Harper and Myerscough - but dont quote me on this - I could be wrong! Each institution ensures students follow set DipAVN modules but may have different requirements in teaching and 'in-days'. At Harper - alike the others, you have to complete core modules before you can elect the specialist ones... there are 4 core modules and then 3 specialist modules with a 5000 word review project to complete study. The modules all have a varying amount of in-days each, depending on the module - you may need to go in for a extra day or so if its harder to teach at a distance. Usually you would go in for 2 - 3 days per module, these are usually a friday or saturday and spaced out over a few months - (this usually pleases the boss!) You can study up to 3 modules at one time, but from experience 2 modules is enough work to take on with having a full time job! It is very much study as you go and likewise, pay as you study. So your not paying for the whole or half of the course at one time, most modules on average cost between £300 - 500 each (or they were - they may have changed a little now) So the payments are spread out - Would your employer be willing to contribute to the fees? Or - you may be eligable for a student loan (I was which surprised me!). You are examined at the end of each module - so everything should be fresh! Most modules are assessed by assignments, written exams and/or triple jump assessments (which arent scary at all!) No practicals :-) You can study at your own pace, providing you study at least 2 modules a year. so very much up to your own time plans. I have completed it in just under 2.5 years and have taken it steady - as I wanted to enjoy learning but also have a life outside work and uni, for me - suited me brilliantly. Yes - def feel alot more knowledgable, but also have seen improvements in the nursing team from my own changes in nursing approaches and others learning from these. In a nutshell - if your keen to learn and you love nursing and developing your skills - you will love it, and may even want to top up to the BSc too.

Hope this helps :-)

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I feel much more informed now. I don't think my employer would pay anything towards it, but it's great to know I can pay by module. Just out of interest, what optional modules did you choose?

i am currently doing the rvc diploma. its not rcvs recognised, it is actually a slightly higher qualification. it is really hard work ( and I'm not just saying that)! but i have learned so much, and i only started it last year.

i had been qualified for 6 years when i started it, and had don't eh esvps cert in anaesthesia prior to it, not that that matters.

not sure re payment options but speak to the uni and they will give you advice. don't be put of because of the rcvs thing though, it is a great course x

good luck in whatever you choose x
