We have recently starting doing quite a few cruciate ops and I would like write a handout and do follow up appointments regarding physio and aftercare. Currently we send them home with a specific post op sheet and they have vet follow up appointments

Re: Physio advice post cruciate surgery

[quote user="shelly jefferies"]

please go careful giving out physio advice if not a physiotherapist, better to term it as rehabilitation exercises. What we advise clients for all ortho ops is immediately post op to ice the leg 3 times daily, to help take inflammation down.

I agree. In my previous job our ortho vets used to head up any physio advise that was given to owners. We used to ice pack legs immediately post op ie in post op imaging and recovery

Re: Physio advice post cruciate surgery

please go careful giving out physio advice if not a physiotherapist, better to term it as rehabilitation exercises. Are you doing TPLO'S or just suture style cruciate repairs? with TPLOs we always advise the owner it will take 12 weeks to fully repair but that careful physio should start right away. For example gentle flexion of the joint plus lead walks where you make them walk very slowly so they cannot hop off effected leg. Once wound has healed hydrtherapy is great too so they can move the leg without all the usual amount of weight bearing.

Re: Physio advice post cruciate surgery

Maybe contact your local ACPAT physio for info? I know they can start hydro treadmill ASAP- as even just standing in the water with out walking can do a lot- poss ask a local NARCH hydro place?
