I have this dream of working as a VN in South Africa, and was just wondering if anyone knows if this is possible? If anyone has managed to do this or knows of anyone who has managed to do it please

Re: Vet nursing in South Africa

[quote user="Kimmi-Rae"]

Search for African Conservation Experience, they do a couple of volunteer veterinary placements and apparently they're really hands on with all kinds of wildlife. That's the company I went through to volunteer at Moholoholo and they are amazing at sorting things out for you.

She works in a game reserve (not sure where) looking after 2 rhinos, one of which she practically hand reared. Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre is also an amazing place to gain experience, Brian the owner is really good at letting volunteers have hands on experience with the animals. I hand reared 4 baby warthogs while I was on a 3 month placement there.

Have a look :)

I've looked into it a little bit, to get a working visa you have to have an existing job offer and I think to work as a qualified vn you have to register with the South African veterinary council, which involves taking an exam, and is expansive. I was wondering if anyone has done the exam and whether it had tone done in South Africa or can be sat here in the uk?
Thanks for the previous two comments, they filled me with hope!!! I am very into elephants and desperate for more veterinary ele experience, do you have any ideas? :)

Re: Vet nursing in South Africa

Hello :)

I have exactly the same dream as you, although I've only just started my training so have a long way to go!

Having emailed tonnes of wildlife centres etc in Africa, it seems finding a job in Africa is possible but like most animal-related jobs they're very far and few between so a good bit of patience and persistence is important.

I volunteered in South Africa a few years ago, and worked with a qualified British vet nurse. She ended up getting a job looking after 2 baby rhinos and is still there so there is definitely hope :D

I'd suggest getting in touch with various veterinary centres and ask how you'd go about finding a job there.

Good luck :)
