im hoping some of you will be able to tell me how on call works at your practice, we have recently heard that the law has changed slightly in that the definition of being on call includes people who are allowed to be away from their place of work

Re: on call pay

Our OOH is covered by an external company who employ a vet to do on call. Something like 8% goes to the practice, and the use of the drugs etc.

We don't get paid at all to be on call (our on call is that we are at home but able to come out asap when needed) on a 1:5 rota. We only get paid IF we get called out (which is fairly rare). We get paid a set amount for the first 30 mins and then paid by the minute after that, all of which gets charged to the client. We also get paid mileage from home to the practice or house we have to visit but that isn't charged to the client. We do get a bonus payment for weekends however, but that does include working Saturday and Sunday morning in the practice and being on call for the rest of the weekend.

Hope that's helpful! x

you would need to look at your individual figures eg total wage divdied by total hours worked including normal day shift plus total hours on call must equal more than minimum wage.

without knowing your exact figures, unless your bonus is really high then it looks like your employer is not aware of this either and technically could be breaking the law, which is a shame for most practices as this information has not been made available or clear yet employees are taking employers to tribunuals over it and winning

Re: on call pay

We don't get paid at all to be on call (our on call is that we are at home but able to come out asap when needed) on a 1:5 rota.
