I use an umbrella company, the one i use is i4 group and never had any problems with them.

Did consider going self employed but im happy using the umbrella company and locuming for me is only short term (im just about to go travelling). Maybe if i locum long term i would consider other options.

Ive been locuming for 18 months and never had any issue finding work. Im in the North West area so i guess it is area dependant but i see alot of vacancies advertised for down south. Ive only been to a handful of practices and got my regular clients now that keep me in work.

Hi all,

I am just trying to find out a bit more about locuming as I am considering it for the future maybe, How difficult do you find it to get work, is there a fairly steady stream of offers or can you end up going months with no work? Im based in the south west and would be thinking of daytimes only but any day of the week considered.

Hi Catherine, I noticed your post on locuming - there is a shortage of nurses at present nationally so you shouldn't have a problem finding work- we always have a large number of vacancies available throughout the UK. I'm in the west midlands, there doesn't seem to be too much competition at the moment, I'm finding it quite easy to line work up. I qualified in 2012, with 3 years training before that :)

Hi there thank you for your message. I'm glad you are enjoying locuming. Which area are you in? Is there much competition for work? If you don't mind me asking, how many years experience nursing do you have? Just wondered if this has a bearing on the rate you charge.

Hi! I have just started locuming myself - initially I was self employed, but then I accepted a job which wouldn't work with self employed locums (i either had to use an umbrella company or set up my own ltd company) so i joined up with an umbrella agency. I emailed as many practices within a 1 hour radius of my house with my CV and joined up with Bright Leaf, A1 locums, BVS and Pet Medic recruitment. I've asked for £12 ph for any placements over 2 days, and I've asked for £14ph for odd days/weekends etc and have achieved both of these (really depends on where you will be working/hours/size of practice etc).
