Sadly a relative of mine has passed away leaving a semi-feral cat that adopted him behind. He lives in a rural area and the cat adopted him last winter when we had the bad snow,

Re: Semi-feral cat rehoming

Thanks for all the replies, things are looking up slightly i think!

I have emailed cats protection as i know they do help with feral cats just waiting for a reply but in the meantime i have put out an appeal on facebook to all my friends and someone may be able to help. She is someone i went to school with and now lives on a dairy farm, she has a few feral cats that she feeds daily and they have access to outbuildings etc. She is more than happy to take him on if i get him neutered which i plan to do anyway if he hasn't already been done.

The cat at the moment wont come inside the house but is eating the food we are leaving outside for him, catching him might be an issue so may have to borrow a cat trap but hoping he will start to gain more trust so i can get him inside and confide him to one area.

Poor kitty, he must be so stressed with the situation.

Re: Semi-feral cat rehoming

[quote user="Sal the 1st"]could you make it a condition when the house sells that the new owner feeds the cat? Very difficult situation... hope you can sort it.

Re: Semi-feral cat rehoming

Hi there,

What area are you in? Some CP branches have farms that they work with for feral and semi-feral cats. They may also have foster homes which work with semi-ferals to get them to the point of being able to be placed in a home. Some smaller rescues may be able to help with this situation also. I hope this is helpful, i know you have already approached some charities but perhaps a few more prodes might get you somewhere. I mention these because my local CP have had dealings with cases like this so know it is possible to place a semi-feral cat.

So far as rehoming goes, would a stables or farm be an option? Maybe someone in your local network of VNs would have a contact of someone like this? Obviously you'd want them to feed him but he'd have a fairly unconfined life, with access to stables/farm buildings to curl up in.

I don't think euthanasia is a "wrong" decision in many cases. Don't forget that death is not negative welfare. Puss will not know he has gone, and if you have a tame vet they may be able to give you an ACP tablet or something to give him before you get him in a crate, so as to make the whole situation as stress-free as possible. He has had a nice time recently and you can feel good about that.

I'd agree that "releasing" him is not an option, not ethical and regardless of the circumstance you are now the cat's owner as you have been feeding and caring for it, and so you would be liable for prosecution of abandonment, regardless of the cat's circumstances.

Good luck
