If you have not actively been involved in the dispensing of either of these you have a few options many of which have already been mentioned here.

use a statement to show how this is a transferable skill. Reference K&U to show you understand the difference between the legal catagories.

use a set task, your assessor could ask you to dispense dermisol, or panacur and as if to a client, the assessor may pose as the client or ask another member of staff or a freind to do it.

Note that the difference between a set task and a simulation, is that you are doing something in just the same way as you would in a real situation. So in this case your assessor would expect to see you:

gain the information you needed to dispense the drug

acsess the animals records

obtain the correct drug

label it appropriately

give the correct advise to an "owner" (or in this case someone pretending to be an owner) on storage, use, and disposal.

In this case if all the other legal catagories are covered a statement of transferable skill should be sufficient, because if you look at the points above, is this process any different from what you would do if it were a POM-V. The only difference would be that if you had a SQP other than a vet in the practice, they may be the one prescribing it.

Re: POM-VPS to dispense?
That's interesting and could be very useful Juliet. Are you an IV? Has this information been given to all IVs?

Also - can you explain a bit more about how you evidenced the professional discussion - I'll start a separate thread so we don't take this conversation too far off track!
hi, no im just a d32/33.

the statement i have explained, is also what the iv/ev will now require to document transferable skills, it is no longer acceptible, just to jot down that it is transferable, you have to document evidence of competance in similar skills.

a professional discussion, can be taped (but you must provide tape counter numbers for each piece of evidence met), or or in a question and answer format, with your reasonings why the discussion is appropriate, and a summing up of your opinions of the students competance, based on their answers, and any other evidence), i prefer the written format, muche easier. there is a sheet designed for the purpose, or you can just write it out.

i use the above two methods when i'am finalising each unit, to pick up pc's and scope that has not , and is unlikely to be met within the deadlines. i then write the unit summary for each unit.

i hope this helps.

what i will say though, is use your iv. if you are unsure of anything keep asking questions, it is what they are there for.

incidently, my iv (who was present at the inspection), did not know some of the things the ev told us too. so there is perhaps failings in comunication throughout the system.

the ev said that you did not actually have to cover every item of scope, however

your assessor must be able to provide a suitable statement, referring to similar tasks, already in the portfolio, and perform a professional discussion, to ask you 1 or 2 questions relative to the scope you have not actually acheived.

for pom-vps, if you have dispensed items from each other category, and have dispensed oral and other topical medications, then your assessor can do the above statement, and ask you if there are any specific requirements you need to meet in order to dispense the pom -vps. yor assessor can complete the staement with her/his opinion of your competancy at dispensing as a whole.

dermisol cream and solution are the only really relevant products in this category, but as has already been stated, you won't be able to use items dispensed for large animals for your small animal portfolio.

the statement and professional discussion can be used for other hard to obtain items, such as servicing/repairs.

i hope this helps clarify things a bit.

cheers

hi, as an assessor and sqp i can tell you that tou have 2 options - one is dermisol and the other dopram drops (though i doubt you woulld dispense these to a client). be wary of using equine medications in a small animal portfolio. in had an svn on placement who had done this at another practice and was not allowed. if you do not cover with dermisol you can do it as an assignment but clear it with your iv first. i hope this helps

I had thought about this - so is it ok to use a medication dispensed to a farmer/eqine client even though the portfolio is for small animals? Why do they have to make it so flipping awkward and complicated!!!

Re: POM-VPS to dispense?

hi, as an assessor and sqp i can tell you that tou have 2 options - one is dermisol and the other dopram drops (though i doubt you woulld dispense these to a client). be wary of using equine medications in a small animal portfolio. in had an svn on placement who had done this at another practice and was not allowed. if you do not cover with dermisol you can do it as an assignment but clear it with your iv first. i hope this helps
