Now the people-work begins, eh?

This is part of a 'bible' of tips a respected 'Tribal Elder' gave me when I was first thrust wide-eyed and scared into a management position...

Strategy 1. There must be a place for the unexpected. Create 30 minutes in every day to deal with possible difficulties. If none occur use the time to network amongst your team and find out how they are.

Strategy 2. The organisation's competence is the sum product of the competences of the workforce. Identify skills in your workforce. Plan to develop them; implement the plan.

Strategy 3. Don't forget to celebrate those who are quietly doing well when you're supporting those who need development. Never ignore appropriate recognition of the quiet ones. Listen to the quiet ones - give them space and time to communicate with you.

Essential Strategy 4. Create a 'hidey-hole' place to retreat away from it all for a five minute breather. (The loo; worked for me!). You don't have to be the Oracle to All, All of the Time.

Strategy 5. When presented with a barrier (problem, difficulty); ask the person identifying the barrier what their solution is to the issue. There are unspoken ideas in your team. Identify the undertone (the actual reason, which is not necessarily the problem you are presented with) before implementing any changes.

Essential Strategy 6. Shuck off the 'work-mode' head when you get home. Allow someone else to plan for you and RELAX!

There are more tips, I am certain sure of it, perhaps some other contributors will be happy to share their experiences?!

You'll find your way. Good luck!!

Oh, yes, one final one. Breathe. It's amazing how that has got me out of a few scrapes. In. Out. In. Out. Give you some thinking time whilst exhibiting a calm demeanour (despite the internal tumult!). If it looks like you're coping and in charge, team confidence in your abilities is assumed.
