As far as I'm aware the Australian nurses wear scrubs rather than uniforms like ours so I'm taking scrub trousers as I have those from my practice and figure they won't take much room. If you book direct with the airlines you can generally get a 30kg baggage allowance so there is a bit of breathing space. I'm heading into Adelaide then moving east

Yes i will keep you informed, likely to be march/april time and i will initially be flying to Sydney before hopefully travelling up the east coast.

Are you taking any uniform with you? I wasn't going to bother as limited to space in backpack but i've heard prices of buying things out there is very high!

I used holidaysafe.co.uk for my travel insurance - they seem to be the best and about the cheapest as most insurers will only cover you for 6months max.

To be honest I haven't thought about indemnity insurance - not entirely sure it's necessary - the Australians don't seem to be quite as strict as the UK as you are paid as normal staff there rather than being under an umbrella corporation or registering as a ltd. company as is necessary in the UK. I'll have to look into this tomorrow.

Bonny10 you'll have to let us know when you're going out there (and where) and if we are around the same place we'll have to have meet up

As Laura has already mentioned you do not need a medical unless you have ongoing health concerns, i don't have any concerns so was issued a visa the day after i applied.

I will also be doing some regional work and hopefully some nursing but all depends on what locum jobs appear and if its the area i want to be in. Im also happy to do any sort of work if can't find nursing jobs.

Liv i haven't really looked toom uch into travel insurance yet as im unsure on the date im going yet but for general backpacking insurance world nomads have good reviews, not sure if you can get anything more specific to nursing.

Sooooo many people seem to be heading to Australia, be good to catch up with fellow nurses over there :)

Yes mainly nursing, I'll be doing the 3 months regional work to qualify for the 2nd year visa in case I decide to stay for the 2nd year. Otherwise I'll be doing anything that comes my way - there are very few locum jobs out there compared to over here so you can't rely on nursing to get you through the year x

That's really helpful. Nothing to declare for me! Are you nursing out there? It's only because under the health req they don't specify what kind of nurse. I assumed it was just human. X

I'm heading out to Australia on a WHV next week (so exciting!). When you apply they will ask questions pertaining to your travelling history and medical history. If you have certain medical conditions then I suppose they may ask you to go to London (I think) for tests or if you have been to certain Asian countries within a certain time period of your entry into Australia they will ask you to have a chest x-ray to check for TB.

If you have nothing to declare then you shouldn't have to (I didn't).

Im heading out there soon under a WHV, you can nurse under a WHV but only stay in one practic for maximum of 6 months.
