I just need a bit of help. Has anyone tried to become registered in Toronto as a vet tech? If so is it easily transferred if you qualified with a Diploma L3? Or do you have to do a course in order to transfer it?
Any help with getting a job

Re: Becoming registered in Ontario Canada

Thanks so much for the reply! I'm just gathering all my documents to send to Icas,I'll definitely email OAVT to make sure i have everything in order. They didn't ask you to do an osce type exam to assess your clinical skills did they ? I was researching veterinary technology in Alberta as my friends are heading there and they want applicants to take a clinical skills assessment which costs about 2,000 dollars before even being eligible to take the VTNE ?

Re: Becoming registered in Ontario Canada

Hi,

I've moved to Toronto from Ireland where I received my degree in veterinary nursing. My advice would be to send your qualifications into ICAS now to be assessed because it took so long for my qualifications to be assessed. I have been approved but now have to sit the VTNE (veterinary technician national exam) this is a multiple choice test that has been drawn up by American vets and techs. There's a lot in the test that I actually didn't know before so definitely need to study for it (contrary to my initial belief!)

I was working here as a vet tech before my qualifications were approved though and also got called for a lot of interviews here before I was approved. I think you can get a job here as long as your qualifications are being examined by ICAS and you are in the process of applying to become an RVT.

I would contact someone in the OAVT (Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians) to see if a diploma can be transferred over because they can make it quite difficult to become registered here. I've spent over $1000 so far trying to become registered and I'm almost there...

I hope this helps

Re: Becoming registered in Ontario Canada

Hiya sorry for delay.

No i haven't gone yet don't plan on going until next year. Ill probably be going to BC now as i have a Staffordshire bull terrier and they are a banned breed in Toronto. I do however know that in Toronto you have to have your qualifications assessed by their Vet governing body. And its quite expensive. I dont know the website of hand but i think someone has put it in a previous post to me further up this convo. Our qualification is not accepted in most areas of Canada sadly.

I did do a free only assessment with a Canadian Attorney and he initially assessed me as qualifying to have enough points in order to get in to Canada, however as our skill isnt on the list would be difficult in getting a perm/temp working visa.

Sorry for not being too much help.
