Tried to mention this today to a vet and basically got my head ripped off. "No, we have always used a full vial we're not going to change now!" like for God's sake I'm trying to be helpful not tell you your wrong, get over yourself. Sorry rant over.

Yeah we finally managed to source some through the pharmacy, but when they actually placed the order the suppliers weren't able to supply them it :-(

I work for Idexx customer support and we do have a reduced Synacthen dose protocol..... you don't have to ask us nicely... we'll even send it to you if you're really nasty to us..... haha.

just need to write that it is for patients under her care she doesn't need to say which ones just one prescription asking them to supply 5x1ml vials

Hi, after reading this post we managed to source some from local pharmacy, however, we don't know how the law states we can buy it off them? I spoke to my vet and she said she could write a prescription but would need to justify the entire quantity (5 x 1ml vials) - how did you all go about this?

The pharmacy mentioned a wholesale agreement but I'm not sure how that works and we could write out 5 presciptions but seems like a bit of a faff!

We managed to get some from our local hospital. I spoke to someone in the pharmacy who was very helpful. They had to order it in for us but didnt seem to have any problems getting it.

They may not be able to get any however you might be able to get them to beg/borrow/steal it lol, we are lucky in that we have a local pharmacy we get quite a bit of stuff from and if they can snaffle us some stuff they will do, they have only just managed to get some more for us today, we use a lot of it usually so if you just beg for a box then they might be able to help a bit.

Thanks guys! Will try and salvage what we have left as you suggested and will try a different pharmacy to the one I phoned earlier!

There is a major manufacturing problem with synacthen hence it only being available to the human side, if you have a pharmacy you get on with you might be able to get some from them if you ask very nicely. but to preserve the stock you do have I would do as PHA86 suggests as we often use a huge dose when we don't actually need to 1/2 a vial will easily do a 20kg dog.

We are only using it when we definitely need to, so we run a basal cortisol initially and then stim if the cortisol suggests it, if addisons is suspected then running electrolytes as well is a good initial test.

We are using at a dose rate of 5ug/kg (in priority cases only), dividing the vials and freezing. I think if you ask Idexx nicely, they will fax you the protocol.
