Synacthen has been on 'back order' for approx 6 months (supplier Henry Schein) and I was wondering if anyone knew anywhere that may still stock it? There is a worldwide shortage apparently and "should" be coming back in a month or so but I won't be holding my breath..

The pharmacy mentioned a wholesale agreement but I'm not sure how that works and we could write out 5 presciptions but seems like a bit of a faff!

There is a major manufacturing problem with synacthen hence it only being available to the human side, if you have a pharmacy you get on with you might be able to get some from them if you ask very nicely. but to preserve the stock you do have I would do as PHA86 suggests as we often use a huge dose when we don't actually need to 1/2 a vial will easily do a 20kg dog.

We are only using it when we definitely need to, so we run a basal cortisol initially and then stim if the cortisol suggests it, if addisons is suspected then running electrolytes as well is a good initial test.

Re: Synacthen

We are using at a dose rate of 5ug/kg (in priority cases only), dividing the vials and freezing.
