Following on from Vicky's good advice Button, watch the nurses and vets carrying out these procedures as often as you can. Watch how they hold the catheter, what they are doing with their other hand etc.

I hate the thought of 'practicing' on animals but unfortunately that is the only way to learn. I started off placing iv catheters in anaesthetised animals (they were needing fluids, not just practice lol) and when I felt able to do it, I had a very good vet who let me. My then boss, was very keen for me to do these things also! Imagine the pressure of the boss 'raising the vein' while little old me tried to place catheter!

Thanks everyone, can't wait to do it again!

I'm not in bed...but do want to be! Have been to aqua aerobics so that's why i've not been around!

Button, i'm on level 2 doing my exams in July (eekk!), have been working in practice for about 2 years so has taken quite a while for me to be shown it. Don't panic about it, they will hopefully only ask you when they feel you are ready. I did feel very nervous about it and apologised to the cat before i started, he was a ginger moggy so i told him gingers are the best in hope that he'd behave for me!

Well done, congratulations! I would be the same. I was chuffed with tableting my first dog on Tuesday!

Out of curiosity (because I've only been working in practice for a month and will be doing ANA course and then SVN), how long in to training are you asked to do this - approximately? Because I see the nurses do it and worry I won't ever be able to do it!! Am I worry too early?

Anyhow, not meaning to turn this into something about me - just thought I'd quickly ask.

And well done again, you should be chuffed
